How do I identify my battery?

The first information to provide would be the make and model of the equipment that you require the battery for e.g. Dell Inspiron N3010D-168 battery LG LB52113B Laptop battery. There is also usually a label on the LG LB52113B Laptop battery, and some of this information on the label will help our sales team to identify your battery quickly. Dell Inspiron N3010D-178 battery This information includes the voltage of the LG LB52113B Laptop battery (note: this is not the same as the voltage on the power supply), the capacity of the LG LB52113B Laptop battery and the chemical construction of the LG LB52113B Laptop battery e.g. Li-ion, Ni-MH or Ni-Cd. This information can be used to ensure the information you have provided matches the information we have about your battery. Dell Inspiron N3010R battery Many battery packs also have part numbers on the label; this can sometimes be used to help identify the LG LB52113B Laptop battery. Tell You Prolong the Life of Your Laptop Battery Dell Inspiron 14R battery

Initialize a new Laptop battery. New laptop batteries should be fully charged before their first use to obtain maximum capacity. Nickel-based batteries should be charged for 16 hours initially and run through 2-4 full charge/full discharge cycles, while lithium ion batteries should be charged for about 5-6 hours. Dell Inspiron N4010 battery Ignore the phone telling you that the battery is full–this is normal but is not accurate if the battery is not initialized. #DO NOT fully discharge a lithium-ion battery! Unlike Ni-Cd batteries, lithium-ion laptop batteries’ life is shortened every time you fully discharge them. Instead, charge them when the battery meter shows one bar left.Dell Inspiron N4010D battery Lithium-ion batteries, like most rechargeable batteries have a set amount of chargers in them.

Keep the Laptop battery cool. Your laptop battery will last longest if used near room temperature, and nothing wears on a battery like extended exposure to high temperatures. While you can’t control the weather, you can avoid leaving your laptop in a hot car or in direct sunlight.Dell Inspiron N4010D-148 battery In addition, check the Laptop battery while it’s charging. If it seems excessively hot, your charger may be malfunctioning.

Charge your Laptop battery correctly, in accordance with its type. Most newer laptop have lithium-ion batteries, while older ones generally have nickel-based batteries. Read the label on the back of the battery or in the technical specifications in the manual to determine which yours is. Dell Inspiron N4010D-158 battery

Nickel-based batteries (either NiCd or NiMH) DO NOT generally suffer from a misunderstood phenomenon known as the “memory effect.” The term “memory effect” has been widely mythologized to describe any and all deterioration of NiCd (and other battery chemistries), in many cases misleading consumers into further shortening the lives of the batteries through over-discharging to “recondition” them. Dell Inspiron N4010R battery [This section formerly read: If you charge the battery partially enough times, eventually the battery “forgets” that it can charge fully. A nickel-based battery suffering from memory effect can be reconditioned, which requires the battery to be completely discharged, then completely recharged (sometimes several times). The appropriate length of time between reconditionings varies. Dell Inspiron 15R battery A good rule to follow for nickel-battery cell-phones is to discharge them completely once every two to three weeks, and only when you have a charger available. Lithium ion batteries can be preserved by careful charging and avoiding storing them at full charge. They do not require “reconditioning.” Regardless of the battery type, use only a charger rated for your battery, and discontinue use of a charger that causes the battery to heat up excessively. Dell Inspiron N5010 battery

Store Laptop batteries properly. If your battery will be out of use for a while, disconnect it from the laptop and store it in a cool place (the refrigerator is good, but freezing temperatures do not slow oxidation) and away from metal objects. Ensure that the battery is not exposed to moisture; try putting the battery in an airtight container or bag. Dell Inspiron N5010D battery Lithium ion batteries are not rated to operate at refrigerated temperatures, so let the laptop battery sit outside the refrigerator for at least an hour before using it again. Lithium ion laptop batteries oxidize least when they are stored at 40% charge. Never store a lithium battery at low voltage. Recharge batteries after storage.

Clean the laptop battery contacts on the battery and on the laptop. Over time, contacts may accumulate dirt. Dell Inspiron N5010D-148 battery Clean them with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol to maximize the efficiency of energy transfer. In addition, if the contacts are two different metals, such as gold and tin, accelerated corrosion known as “fretting” occurs. Cutting the corrosion from fretted contacts often requires solvents, such as acetone or nail polish remover. Apple MacBook Pro 15 inch battery Be careful: these solvent dissolve plastic, so use a Q-Tip to avoid damaging the battery housing or the laptop.

Do You Know How to Take Care Your Laptop Battery

When you buy a new laptop, you probably don’t think too much about its power supply system, but the care and feeding of batteries is perhaps the biggest single factor in your laptop’s ease of use. If you’re keeping your present outfit, then you’ve already got whatever power supply came with it. Apple PowerBook G4 15inch battery This quick review of batteries can help you choose your next laptop, while reducing battery hassles with your current one (no pun intended). And multiple batteries are highly recommended for any outfit. We’ll look at types of batteries, methods of keeping them charged and strategies for using them.

Battery Types

Apple iBook G4 12inch battery In the dim and distant past (a couple years ago), laptop batteries came in five different species. Now, lead acid bricks and drugstore batteries cell are about gone and even lithium ion (Li-Ion) batteries are obsolescent (but see the nearby sidebar). Today, we’re down to mostly nickel metal lithium ion (Li-Ion) models.

Apple iBook G3 12inch battery Both types have a good weight to power ratio: that is, they can store and deliver more (longer) power than older types of the same size. They also keep a steady voltage level through more of their discharge cycle. Older battery types could drop below the voltage required by the camcorder even though there was plenty of juice left in them.

Both types are long lasting, though Li-Ion designs are the true long-distance champs. Apple PowerBook G4 15inch Titanium battery A word

Charge!

Obviously, batteries discharge during use and you have to tank them up again. Some camcorders still charge batteries internally, but many models come with an external charger. Apple PowerBook G4 12inch battery If you’re shopping for that new camcorder, check its charging system carefully, since an external charger will allow you to keep shooting with one camcorder battery while the other is charging.

First, ensure that you can charge laptop batteries via 11.1-volt car cigarette plugs as well as 120-volt wall power. Apple iBook G4 14inch battery Holidays, picnics, weddings just about every kind of event involves driving someplace, sooner or later. Many campers and RVers live on 14-volt DC exclusively. Drive time is an ideal time to charge laptop batteries, especially if your system includes quick charge capability. Apple iBook G3 14inch battery

“Quick charge” typically means that the charger works very rapidly, often replenishing a laptop battery in one hour or less. But on some appliances, it’s just a selectable mode that provides a quick-and-dirty juice-up, rather than a fully programmed recharge. Apple PowerBook G4 17inch battery

You see, batteries are filled like gas tanks: quickly at first, more cautiously when the tank is nearly full, and in short trickles when you top off the fill (even though the sign on the pump says not to).Apple A1245 A properly programmed charging system does the same thing and delivers power longer during the battery’s next use. It also prolongs its working life overall.

After 12-volt operation and programmed recharging, the next feature to look for is multiple battery capacity. A few chargers will juice up two bricks at once, which is a great time saver for power users (pun intended). Apple A1189

Whether buying a new system or using your old one, you need to know when to charge your batteries. Different people have different theories about this, but the following procedure is safe and effective: Apple MA458

Recharge a spent battery as soon as possible after use. While this isn’t critical, shallower charges of Li-Ion batteries put less stress on the battery than a deep full charge. Besides, you never know when you might meet Elvis. Apple MA458*/A Do not leave the battery in the charger after the indicator says it’s fully replenished. (Don’t leave the battery in the laptop either.) Store the battery at room temperature. Stashing it in the fridge to slow battery drain is pointless if you… Top up the battery again, just before your next shooting session, to compensate for power slowly lost while the battery was on the shelf. Apple MA458G/A Unless you’re using old NiCds (see sidebar) it’s not necessary to “condition” a battery by discharging it down to one volt before recharging it. A periodic full discharge is not required for lithium-based batteries and, in fact, a partial re-charge produces less wear than a full charge.

Finally, don’t expect even the most tenderly nurtured batteries to last forever. Apple MA458J/A Each time a battery is recharged, it accepts a minutely smaller amount of power than the previous time, until eventually the poor baby is pooping out after ten minutes of shooting. If you’re a weekend warrior taping birthdays and vacations, expect your batteries to last for years. If you shoot weddings professionally, budget for frequent replacements. Apple A1175 One manufacturer suggests that its batteries will last for 400-800 charges, although we find that range to be a little too broad to be useful.

Perhaps I’m paranoid, but manufacturers do change battery designs from one laptop to the next, and they do eventually stop supporting their oldest models. Apple A1185 For that reason, I bought more batteries than I ever use at one time, so that each requires fewer recharges per year and therefore lasts longer.

Power as you Shoot

How many batteries do you really have to have? That depends on many factors. Apple MA561 The older the bricks, the faster they quit. The more you shoot per hour, the more you need.

The trick is to compare your charger speed to your shooting demands. For instance, I typically blow through a battery twice as fast as my charger can resuscitate it. For this reason, I run three batteries, starting every session with all three charged. Apple MA561FE/A When the first is empty, I stick it in the charger and by the time the next two are shot, the first is ready again. That way, I have the equivalent of four batteries per session. In my case, that gives me an honest 2.5 hours of shooting time, which is more than enough.

Your needs will certainly be different, but you should have at least one spare battery for backup. Apple MA561G/A Remember that battery capacity ratings are about as realistic as EPA gas mileage figures. If the manufacturer promises 60 minutes, plan on 40 to start, slowly tapering down to 15 minutes before you replace that battery.

Apple MA561J/A If you do shoot a lot, consider an external battery pack: either a block that you clip on your belt or sling from your shoulder, or even a belt. You can find models for many camcorders (especially professional three-chip models) and many allow you to power an external light as well. Even if you use the built-in camera light, you’ll have ample power to blaze away without compromising your shooting time. Apple A1280

No matter how many units you run, you want to make each one last as long as possible; so here are some tips for conserving battery power. First, never use a built-in laptop light unless you absolutely have to. Lights love juice like mosquitoes love blood. Apple A1281

Next, don’t leave your laptop on standby for any length of time, especially if you’re using auto exposure and focus. Remember: your unit goes right on adjusting the aperture and focus whether you’re shooting or not and each adjustment is made by an electric motor powered by your battery. Apple A1045 Even when actually recording, you’ll conserve juice if you can shift one or both controls to manual. This can apply to image stabilization as well, so plop that laptop on a tripod and turn off the stabilization.

Another big power drain is the zoom lens, which is always motor-driven. Apple A1078 Try to avoid lots of zooms in shots (they look amateurish anyway) and when you re-frame by zooming, pre-visualize your new composition so that you can zoom right to it, rather than hunting around for it.

Also, remember that batteries give up quicker in cold weather. Apple A1148 When shooting on the slopes, keep spare batteries as close to your warm self as your pockets permit. If you won’t be shooting for a few minutes, remove the battery already in the camcorder and get it toasty as well. When you replace it, you’ll get quite a few more minutes out of it.

So: look for lithium ion designs when shopping for new gear, keep your batteries topped up properly, carry enough to keep shooting and don’t expect them to last forever. And that’s about it. Apple E68043

1. There are three kinds of 18650 lithium-ion battery in the market: 2200,2400,2600 mA. A typical Dell inspiron 1520 battery with six battery assembly (Series 2 and 3). If it is a genuine original batteries, typically Japan and South Korea or domestic manufacturers A formal 18650 cells. These batteries have the quality and safety assurance through rigorous testing, the cost is usually in the 3-4 dollars (based on the different capacities). Apple M9756G/A battery So a normal laptop battery (6-cell) costs around 20 dollars. If B grade, or batteries disassemble from the old machine (the quality and even safety issues batteries from Japan and South Korea). Their price between 1.5-2 dollar. Such Dell inspiron 1720 battery assembly or re-assembled into a 6cell laptop battery cost 10-15 dollar. Apple M9756J/A battery In addition, even worse, some manufacturers use more poor illegal 18650, often have security problems (that can cause the battery explosion), its 6cell laptop battery only cost 8 dollar or less.

2. Laptop battery PCB control panel : a good control panel can extend laptop battery life and protect the safety. Its cost is usually 10 dollar; If it is bad dysfunction PCB Dell inspiron 1525 battery control panel, or board disassemble from the old machine, its cost is only 5 dollar. Apple A1008 battery

Lenovo IdeaPad U160-08945MU Charger

The new XPS lineup is thin – thin enough, in fact, to qualify for Ultrabook status. HP HSTNN-IB89 , Dell is pushing the issue with its XPS 14 model, which you’re more likely to find with a 32GB mSATA SSD – Flash storage is one of the Ultrabook requirements. Not every configuration will earn the status, however, since you’ll be able to buy an XPS with a standard 500GB hard drive. Despite being a premium notebook, the drives are still only 5400RPM. Boo, Dell. Thanks to the Ivy Bridge chipset, USB 3.0 is natively supported. HP HSTNN-OB89 , With no need for third party chips, all of the USB ports on these guys are of the SuperSpeed variety: that’s two for the XPS 14, and three for the XPS 15. You’re also getting Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI, audio jacks, and an SD card reader. In the case of the XPS 15, you can even opt for Blu-ray. It’s pretty interesting that Dell chose to stick with an optical drive, whereas some manufacturers (ahem) are looking past the feature. HP HSTNN-W79C-7 , I got to spend some time with the new XPS models before the next-gen MacBook Pro came out, and I remarked to the Dell staff that these would be an excellent alternative for users who want to upgrade, but need the ODD capability.HP HSTNN-XB89

I stand by that statement, too. HP HSTNN-IB93 , The Retina variant of the MacBook Pro is a really stellar device. If you’re looking for something a bit cheaper, however, then the XPS 14 and 15 should be at the top of your list – above the non-Retina MacBook Pro 15. It’s not all peaches and cream down in Round Rock, however, and users will no doubt find things to criticize about the new XPS lineup. As seems to be the trend lately, the battery is non-user serviceable. HP HSTNN-DB94 , That means when it eventually fails, you’re going to have to pay Dell, or an authorized service rep, to replace it for you.The new machines are also just a bit heavier than we’d like to see, at 4.6 or 4.9 pounds for the XPS 14 and 5.8 pounds for the XPS 15 – no doubt over five and six, respectively, once you include the power bricks. Still, it’s not like the RAM is soldered down, or the drive is proprietary, HP 516479-121 , which means you’ll be able to buy these, open them up (we hope), and push in all the RAM and SSDs you can handle. Finally, the cost – the XPS 14 will start at $1099, which is not out of line for the premium Ultrabook market, and the XPS 15 will come in starting at $1299. These are really good prices for machines that feel this good – and they do feel really good. I mentioned earlier that these laptops are a new standard from Dell, and they are. HP HSTNN-XB91

The integrated GPU, now under the name HD 4000, was seriously upgraded and matches the performance of AMD’s Radeon HD 6620G. HP NBP8A157B1 , Even though this is a large step forward in comparison to the old HD 3000 GPU, the absolute 3D performance remains uninspiring. To resolve this, the dedicated Nvidia GeForce GT 650M is installed and is available with either 1 or 2 GB of GDDR5 RAM. Our test model features only the 1 GB version but this should have no negative effects if we keep detail settings to playable frame rates on the 650M. HP HSTNN-OB91 , The GT 650M is based on the 28 nm Kepler architecture and sports 384 shader ALUs, clocked at 745 MHz in base mode and 835 MHz in turbo mode. With 8 GB DDR3 RAM in two 4 GB DDR3-1600 modules, the M14x is up to date. For storage, we chose a 64 GB mSATA SSD in combination with a 500 GByte 2.5 inch HDD. As pointed out above, the online configurator offers a multitude of different storage options. HP HSTNN-DB91 , The test model starts into our round of benchmarks with an excellent score of 6.85 points in Cinebench R11.5 (64-bit). This puts the M14x a few numbers above all notebooks tested so far with the same CPU, a result that speaks of an optimally exploited TurboBoost. We also set new records in the x264 HD Benchmark 4.0 with 150.05 and 37.67 fps in passes 1 and 2. Cinebench R10’s single thread test (64-bit) missed a new best score only narrowly with 6154 points. The Core i7-2630QM from last year’s test was left in the dust.HP NZ375AA

The Dell Vostro 3350 has similar design to the Vostro 3300, featuring a sturdy and good looking aluminium outer-shell — everything’s almost the same. Lenovo IdeaPad S100 Charger , The Vostro 3350’s exterior metal finish gives the business laptop a very sturdy build like the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E420s. The metal hinges the screen rests on are extremely well built ensuring the screen is firmly rooted to the rest of the chassis. The laptop’s surface is matte, and therefore resistant to smudges and dust. The Vostro 3350’s 13.3-inch screen has decent viewing angles, more than what we had hoped for. Lenovo IdeaPad S205 Charger , The full-sized chiclet styled, isolated keyboard now features better spaced out keys, making typing much easier; the keys deliver good tactile feedback. The keyboard deck doesn’t suffer from any flex and the palm rest is accommodative enough to ensure comfortable typing. Keys featuring secondary functions are clearly stamped with orange labels making them easier to recognise and use. The trackpad is wide, supports multi-touch gestures and is pretty accurate — it has a fine texture which feels nice on touch. The mouse keys are discrete and easy to press but a touch too noisy.Lenovo IdeaPad U160 Charger

Three distinct shortcut buttons find their place on the Dell Vostro 3350 business laptop’s chassis, above the keyboard. Lenovo IdeaPad U160-08945KU Charger , The first button opens up various usable options in Window’s Mobility Center. The second connects you to the Dell Support Center and the last button is somewhat our favourite – a customisable application -launch button. This will, no doubt, keep business users happy. Following the latest trend of the industry, the Dell Vostro 3350 business laptop features Intel’s new Sandy Bridge processor. Lenovo IdeaPad U160-08945LU Charger , The unit that was sent to us features the Core i7- 2620 clocked at 2.9GHz with 4 GB of RAM and dedicated graphics AMD Radeon HD 6490M option and a 500GB hard drive. The Dell 3350 has a screen size of 13.3-inch packing in 1333×768 pixels. Unlike the Lenovo ThinkPad E420s this device has a matte display; though the device doesn’t output the same vivid display like the ThinkPad E420s, the matte finish ensures absolutely zero reflection. Matte screens are also slightly better for reading text for longer durations, cutting out the gloss on most modern laptops.Lenovo IdeaPad U160-08945MU Charger

As for the connectivity options, the Dell Vostro 3350 is miles ahead of its competition. LENOVO IdeaPad Y460C Charger , Its left side has 2 USB 3.0 ports, an ethernet port and a tray loading DVD slot. The right edge features a VGA, HDMI port, a USB 2.0/eSATA hybrid port and a headphone and microphone jack. On the front you get an 8-in-1 card reader. We are really glad the Vostro 3350 features two USB 3.0 ports, this ensures for much faster data transfer speeds compared to the older USB 2.0 port. Lenovo IdeaPad Y460AT Charger , Wireless communication protocols like Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth 3.0 are also supported on the Dell Vostro 3350. Taking a cue from the ThinkPads, the Dell Vostro 3350 also sports a spill-resistant keyboard. For added security the unit also features a fingerprint reader for biometric protection. The Dell Vostro 3350 also features a 2MP in-built HD webcam and the laptop comes with pre-installed Skype software — video conferencing is a treat. Lenovo IdeaPad Y460A Charger , The new Alienware M14x replaces the Alienware M15x for high-end enthusiast gamers looking for a slightly more portable gaming laptop that continues to deliver uncompromising performance. Sitting between the M11x and M17x, the Alienware M14x is a 14-inch gaming laptop with a widescreen form factor and enough firepower within to bring the latest and greatest games down to their knees. Let’s take a closer look at the Alienware M14x gaming laptop.Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 Charger

Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 Battery

The Alienware M14x sports a unique style and design which if famously synonymous with Alienware machines, be it laptop or desktops. LENOVO ThinkPad W701 Charger , The 14-inch, widescreen laptop’s chassis is made of magnesium alloy and the laptop looks and feels rigidly built with metal almost everywhere (except the glossy screen). But the laptop’s slightly curved spine restricts the screen and chassis’ central hinge to a small section near the centre, giving the screen a slightly flimsy air. Nonetheless, the M14x’s thick, brawny profile with angular edges adds to the premium appeal of the laptop. With an 8-cell in-built battery, the laptop weighs just about 3 kg — heavier than most 14-inch laptops — and it doesn’t win any awards for being slim and trim. LENOVO ThinkPad W701 Charger , But the Alienware M14x is the way it is for a reason and that’s to accommodate all the high-end hardware that sits within. It has huge heat vents along the chassis edge and the screen spans edge-to-edge — much like an iMac — which blends in well with the Alienware M14x’s charm.Lenovo IdeaPad U165-ATH Charger

The new Alienware M14x has a 14-inch widescreen WLED display screen that’s glossy in nature. Lenovo IdeaPad U165-AON Charger , And unlike most 14-inch laptops that make do with a 1366×768 screen, the M14x’s glossy screen houses a 1600×900 pixel resolution display — a true 16:9 aspect ratio screen. This enables the M14x to play games at higher resolution resulting in more fun. Its screen has a tiny webcam hole at the top bezel, it’s barely visible but the thing comes in handy if you do a lot of videochats over Skype, Facebook or Google+. Lenovo IdeaPad U165 Charger , The Alienware M14x’s screen is one of the brightest, most vibrant display’s we’ve seen in a laptop for some time — the brightness and contrast levels are high, colour reproduction very good, and there’s very little motion blur which augers well for high octane gaming.HP HSTNN-CB87

The Alienware M14x, like all previous Alienware machines we’ve reviewed, comes with an Alien Command Center software that among other things allows you to customize the gaming laptop’s glowing LED lights in a variety of colours and patterns. HP HSTNN-XB87 , You can have just the keyboard split in three different sections with unique light glows, the same for the laptop’s logo and front vents. No other laptop comes anywhere close to offering the array of LED customization options that Alienware M14x does. It adds to the laptop’s overall appeal, no doubt.Apart from a very good 14-inch display and Alien FX console, the Alienware M14x laptop sports an Intel Core i7-2720QM 2.2 GHz processor, 6 GB of DDR3 RAM, a 320GB hard drive and 1.5 GB Nvidia GeForce GT555M graphics. HP NB800AA , Quite a potent hardware combination for a laptop. The Alienware M14x has three USB ports, a VGA and HDMI port, 9-in-1 card reader, gigabit ethernet, headphone and mic for connectivity, apart from Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth for wireless communication. The laptop ships with a 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium operating system. HP 513130-321 , All good but the only minor complaint we have is that the manufacturer should’ve offered more RAM and a larger capacity hard drive with the Alienware M14x at its asking price.HP 535753-001

Like the recent Samsung laptops, Dell put a lot of effort into the computers’ displays. HP 535808-001 , You will regrettably find no IPS panels here, though you won’t find an IPS price tag, either. The laptops do have bright, easily viewable displays, clocking in at 400 nits on the 14-inch model, and 350 nits on the XPS 15.Unlike a lot of manufacturers, the laptops are standardized around high-resolution displays – the XPS 14 comes with a 1600×900 screen, while its bigger brother comes in with a full HD, 1920×1080 display.HP 591998-141 , The fact that these laptops were coming was no surprise to many who follow the industry; Dell had a bit of a hard time keeping the new models under wraps. Each computer comes with a spill-resistant, chiclet-style keyboard. They’re both backlit, too, and come with a glass touchpad. HP 593576-001 , The touchpad reportedly supports multitouch gestures along its integrated buttons, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. Aside from two-finger scrolling, which actually works pretty well, Windows seems to have a terrible time supporting such a feature.HP HSTNN-1B1D

ASUS S96 Battery

The Sony Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B’s low weight in relation to screen size and the non-glare screen speak to its mobile outdoor use. ASUS S96J Battery , Although it does not achieve an extremely high brightness and you should avoid direct sunlight when possible, Sony’s Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B copes well in all other cases. Moreover, since the maximum brightness is maintained on battery power, the adapter can be left at home or in the case. The screen’s virtually flawless presentation finds its pinnacle in excellent viewing angle stability. ASUS A1 Charger , The IPS screen built into Sony’s Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B does not show any weaknesses on either the horizontal or vertical plane. Even in extreme angles, the colors remain stable to the largest extent though the contrast and the brightness weaken a bit. The bottom line is that this model provides first rate display performance. Several viewers sitting at different angles, will all have a perfect view of the displayed content from this screen.ASUS F7 Charger

ASUS F7 Charger

Sony’s Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B is powered by a dual-core CPU that is still nased on the Sandy bridge architecture. Asus F7000 Charger , Nonetheless, the Core i7-2640M is extremely fast and was one of the fastest dual-core notebook CPUs until the end of 2011. It has a base clock of 2.8GHz and, assuming favorable thermal conditions, the CPU can achieve speeds of up to 3.5GHz on one core and 3.3GHz on both cores via Turbo Boost. The level 3 cache of 4MB is also quite high. The TDP of 35 watts, however, is not energy-efficient. Asus F74 Charger , It reserves the Core i7-2640M for larger multimedia notebooks rather than ultra-portable devices. In this case, we believe it is perfect for Sony’s Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B.We analyzed the Intel Core i7-2640M CPU in the Vaio by using Cinebench R10 and R11.5. We tested the processor’s pure performance in both single and multi-thread operation. The Turbo Boost technology worked perfectly in the tests. Both cores could reach their maximum clock in the single as well as multi-thread tests.Asus F7400 Charger

Results were as expected with Cinebench R10 records 9778 points in the 32bit and 11746 points in the 64bit multi-thread benchmark. Asus F7400B Charger , Sony’s Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B 3.07 achieves 3.07 points in Cinebench R11.5 – also as expected. However, comparable devices such as Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 (NWK3QGE) were able to score as much as four percent higher in synthetic benchmarks. We evaluate the general performance of the system by using the benchmarks PCMark 7 and PCMark Vantage. Asus F74B Charger , The scores are based on how well the installed components interact with each other and on their efficiency. A fast hard disk, such as an SSD, can lead to considerably higher scores. We also look at Window’s performance index, which uncovers potential bottlenecks.According to the benchmarks, the weakest component is the hard disk. This is not surprising considering that tlled drive is a conventional hard disk with a speed of 5400 revolutions per minute.Asus F7B Charger

The other subscores in the PCMark tests are not neither great nor unacceptably bad. Asus L7 Charger , The overall performance is very appealing for use as both a multimedia device or a business notebook.5.9Windows 7 Experience IndexProcessorCalculations per second7.1Memory (RAM)Memory operations per second7.5GraphicsDesktop performance for Windows Aero6.7Gaming graphics3D business and gaming graphics6.7Primary hard diskDisk data transfer rate5.9. The DPC latency Checker shows no abnormalities in the form of red spikes. Asus L7000 Charger , The default drivers should not have any problems or adverse affects on real-time streams. The 2.5-inch Hitachi hard disk in Sony’s Vaio VPC-SE2M9E has a capacity of 750 GB. It is a conventional HDD and is appropriate for our application field especially since a conventional hard disk fuses high capacity with a low price. The TravelStar 5K750 spins at 5400RPM and is easy on the ears at the expense of performance.Asus L7000B Charger

Asus L7000B Battery

This hard disk is an average performer. Tests with HDTune and CrystalDiskMark confirm the average transfer rate of 74.6 MB/s, a rate which is not exactly awe-inspiring. Asus L7000C Charger , The access speed of 20.5 milliseconds is also average at best. CrystalDiskMark specifies rates of 96.7 and 94.6 MB/s in sequential read and write. In brief, the performance is sufficient for the intended field of use. One positive of this average performance is that the hard disk doesn’t annoy with loud noises or high-pitched hums.To tweak graphics performance, the user can switch between either the integrated processor graphics or the dedicated AMD Radeon HD 6630M. Sony installs a slider for this above the keyboard. Asus L7000H Charger , “STAMINA” enables processor graphics and “SPEED” activates the dedicated 3D card. The integrated graphics card is a “standard” card of the Sandy Bridge processors. The Intel HD Graphics 3000 can overclock its computing cores when necessary by using Turbo Boost. In terms of performance, Intel’s HD Graphics 3000 is about on par with dedicated entry-level models such as AMD’s Mobility Radeon HD 5450.Asus L7000G Charger , However, using the integrated graphics is not required for all graphic-heavy requirements. Playing DVD and BluRay movies also work perfectly with it.

When the user wants the greatest possible 3D power and doesn’t need the extended Asus L7000D Charger life, the dedicated AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics can be enabled via the slider. It is a DirectX 11 capable midrange model with 480 Unified Shaders, support for Eyefinity+ and the newer UVD3 video decoder.Similar to the 5000 range, the 6600M series has an integrated HD audio controller that is capable of transmitting 7.1 surround sound via HDMI and Displayport.Games are definitely not the Sony Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B’s specialty, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t play a fairly up-to-date game every now and again. Asus L7000E Charger , The midrange graphics card quickly finds its limits in demanding 3D tracks like Battlefield 3. Older games should run without problems and even current titles are often rendered smoothly in low details and at an adjusted resolution. For example, CoD MW3 and Mass Effect 3 can be played on high detail levels without major losses. In return, Risen 2 runs only reasonably well on the lowest settings.ASUS S96 Battery

In the test, we regularly achieved download speeds of 7 MBit/s with an O2 card in a small town at Lower Rhine, a very good rate considering the region. ASUS F3U-AP099C Battery , Our results underline the 3G module’s performance. The wifi module also works very well. A comparison with an iMac and a netbook – privately owned by the tester – showed that Sony’s Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B achieved the maximum range and often still had a signal where the iMac and netbook had lost it.For fans of cabled communication, the Sony Vaio has a Gigabit LAN port available with a Realtek controller.ASUS M51 Battery

The Sony Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B is a multimedia notebook, but its docking station and pleasantly large screen will accommodate business usage as well. ASUS M51A Battery , Security is an issue in business, so the Vaio features the almost compulsory Kensington lock as well as a fingerprint sensor between the mouse keys.Like many current notebooks, the VPC-SE2M9E/B’s scope of delivery is poor. In fact, there is only the usual paperwork and a quick start guide, power consumption specifications, instructions for the 3G module and a Vaio product catalog.ASUS M51Kr Battery , However, anyone who takes a look at the list of accessories on Sony’s website will be overwhelmed by the breadth of offerings. There are cases, mice and keyboards to name a few. The docking station VGP-PRS25 and the sheet battery VGP-BPSC29 that doubles the total battery capacity, each for EUR 150 (~$193 USD), are especially interesting. ASUS M51Se Battery , A big maintenance cover on the bottom enables easy access to both hard disk and RAM. Other upgrades are not provided. If you want to clean the fan, you’ll have to disassemble the case more than Sony probably intended its end-users to do. The fan is located above the keyboard between both display hinges.ASUS M51Sn Battery

Sony grants a standard 12 month warranty. ASUS X70Kr Battery , It can be extended by another 12 months for free when the device is registered via the dealer. If you need even more security, Sony has additional warranty products in it range. For example, a one-year or two-year warranty extension will cost EUR 99 ($127 USD) and EUR 179 ($231 USD), respectively. Sony charges EUR 289 ($373 USD)for a three year warranty with on-site service.Like Sony’s entire Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B chassis, the keyboard is black and merges seamlessly into the overall elegant look. ASUS X70F Battery , Sony installs a chiclet-style keyboard commonly found in slim notebook designs. These “chewing gum” keyboards are characterized by the fairly large gap between the single keys. These keyboards only need a low build which makes them perfect for slim notebooks. The key size in Sony’s Vaio is a pleasant 15 millimeters. Only the cursor, degree and F keys are smaller. ASUS X70E Battery , A full-blown number pad is included with dedicated “Home”, “End”, “Insert” and “Delete” keys. The keys sport a clear pressure point and the key drop is sufficient for speedy touch-typing.ASUS S96JS Battery

ASUS S96JS Battery

Sony places additional keys with proprietary special functions above the F key row. ASUS S96JP Battery , In the upper right beside the power button, keys labeled “ASSIST”, “WEB” and “VAIO” are found. While the “WEB” button is self-explanatory, the other two need a brief explanation. “ASSIST” provides the user with tools for troubleshooting and solving like system recovery. This button’s function can be opened while running Windows as well as when the device is turned off. The “VAIO” button opens a number of hardware and software settings.ASUS S96JH Battery , On its right, there is a slider with the options “STAMINA” and “SPEED” for choosing the graphics card – so either processor graphics or dedicated card. We believe it is a very convenient function. Nevertheless, automatic switching via Optimus in current nVidia models is superior because the screen flickers for a moment with Sony’s solution. The keyboard’s LED light is also very handy as it enables hitting the right keys even in the dark. Additionally, the mixture of white LEDs and the midnight black notebook is an eye-catcher.ASUS S96JF Battery

The black touchpad is quite large at about 95 x 55 millimeters. ASUS M51Sr Battery , The surface of the touchpad supports multi-touch use and allows precise gesture control with clear borders. Both click keys can only be accurately used in the outer areas. The key drop decreases toward the center and the feedback can become unclear. After routine use, however, this is a non-issue for the user. The high-end impression that Sony Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B makes with its case continues with the screen. At 15.5 inches diagonally, it is suitable as a multimedia machine and also looks good in business environments, ASUS M51Ta Battery , which is particularly impressive considering the moderate weight. The native Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels virtually calls for multimedia use such as BluRay playback. The non-glare screen is almost shunned in the multimedia category because it does not reproduce colors as brilliant as its glossy counterparts. However, glossy screens often exaggerate colors to undesirable levels. We also appreciate a matte screen all the more in a device with such a vast application field.ASUS M51Tr Battery

Our lab measurements also confirm good screen rates. ASUS M51Va Battery , The average brightness is 238 cd/m2 and should be enough for even brighter surroundings under mellow sunlight, like on a terrace. The pleasant, homogeneous illumination of 87% decreases strongly in the lower left corner, although this will only be noticeable by the most perceptive of users. The black value of 0.41 cd/m2 is agreeably low and leads to a high contrast of 622:1. Sony’s Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B reproduces colors and gray shades well. The colors look quite natural and do not have an overlying color. ASUS M51Vr Battery , The black value is very good and results in a saturated reproduction of dark movie scenes or picture areas. The high contrast contributes to this effect. But we also have to criticize the Vaio’s screen a bit. The sRGB color spectrum’s coverage of nearly 80% is satisfactory, but the screen wastes a lot of its potential since a large part of its color space goes beyond the limits of the sRGB standard. This is particularly evident in the yellow range. ASUS S62 Battery , We used Acer’s TravelMate 5760G-2454G50Mnsk for comparison. The Acer plays in another league with an sRGB coverage of 88 percent.

IBM FRU 93P5027

IBM FRU 93P5028

However, if you’re on a strict budget then it’s worth remembering that the original Ultrabook lineup – including the HP Folio 13, the Samsung Series 5 and, IBM FRU 92P1169 , the-Ultrabook-that-isn’t-actually-an-Ultrabook, the MacBook Air – all run on Sandy Bridge processors and are more than up to the job. Running Windows 7 Home Premium Edition (with the option of upgrading to Window 7 Professional for an extra cost), the Sony Vaio T13 boasts a quick response time from sleep mode, thanks to the hybrid storage system made up of a 320GB HDD and a 32GB SSD. Lenovo 57Y4565 , The SSD aspect kicks the Intel Smart Response Technology and Sony’s Rapid Wake into action, meaning almost instantaneous wake times. There is a standard SSD option too, which will give you an extra couple of hours battery life – nine as opposed to seven. Our hybrid hard drive review unit managed a fairly ordinary 212 minutes under duress. Lenovo 57Y4564 , A strong point of the Sony Vaio T13 is its connectivity options, which include a raft of ‘legacy’ ports. There are a couple of USB ports on the left-hand side, one of which is of the faster USB 3.0 variety, and on the right-hand side of the machine there is a VGA port, an HDMI port, an Ethernet option and a 3.5mm jack for your headphones or speakers. There’s even a multi-card reader, as well.Lenovo 42T4815

In terms of wireless connectivity, you’re presented with 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.Lenovo 42T4814 , Ultrabooks are great for digital media, social networking and keeping in touch while on the go, and the Sony Vaio T13 is no exception to this rule. The built-in webcam is HD, has 1.3 megapixels and is powered by Exmor for PC. Exmor is a technology that Sony has used with some of its CMOS image sensors for its digital cameras, including the excellent Sony RX100, and we’re told the inclusion “ensures sharper details, higher contrast and rich colours” and, after giving it the once over, we can’t argue with that. Lenovo 42T4807 , The PC’s display may not be Full HD, with a 1366 x 768 resolution, but this seems to be the standard across sub-£1,000 Ultrabooks at the moment. The Sony Vaio T13 had no issues playing back HD video from a range of file formats, and the sound quality is particularly strong for such a slim notebook as a result of the xLOUD and Clear Phase technology onboard – so it’s more than acceptable as a media-based machine. Lenovo 42T4806 , The 13.3-inch display isn’t the greatest though; the semi-gloss finish is quite reflective, and viewing angles aren’t fantastic.IBM FRU 93P5030

The Web-enabled software is designed to let someone in New York collaborate in realtime with someone in Los Angeles,Lenovo 3000 Y300 Charger , for instance, without any latency, or audio delays, LL Cool J said, speaking at the event at the Sony Club.Far from a mere celebrity figurehead on the project, LL Cool J actually came up with the idea for the software, forming a company called Boomdizzle which met with teams of engineers from various companies in efforts to get the concept off the ground.”Sony got it from the beginning,” said the hiphop artist, who first rose to commercial and critical success during the 1980s with an album named Radio.”Lenovo 3000 Y310 Charger , We’re embracing this technology, and it’s hot,” contended Dave McFarland, product manager at Sony for Viao PCs, also at the press rollout.LL Cool J has also acted in movies like In Too Deep and Last Holiday. He currently plays the role of NCIS Special Agent Sam Hanna on the CBS TV show NCIS: Los Angeles.”Nothing will replace the traditional [music] studio,” he admitted at the press launch.Lenovo 3000 Y310a Charger , Yet on the other hand, My Connect will let music pros collaborate from on the road, he suggested, and it will introduce budding artists to other players with similar interests who might be located anywhere in the world.LENOVO 3000 Y410a Charger

LENOVO 3000 Y410a Series Charger

The My Connect Studio software offers strong encryption as an option, so musicians can choose to make a session either closed or “open to the public.” Lenovo Thinkpad R61i Charger , At first, the software will support collaboration between only two simultaneous users in a session, but eventually, support will be “unlimited, within reason,” according to the rapper.Right now, musicians using the Microsoft Windows-based software will need to run it on a specially rigged Vaio E 14P notebook PC. Otherwise, the music will sound “tinny,” McFarland acknowledged later, in an interview with NotebookReview.Lenovo Thinkpad R61 Charger , That’s because the software is tooled to work with other components in the Future Sounds My Connect Studio Package bundle, including Dolby Home Theatre v4 Audio Technology and Sony’s MDR-V55/BR DJ-style headphones. The package also includes a one-year subscription to the My Connect Studio service, with 10 hours/month session time; 25 exclusive music tracks, and “additional channels and filters. Lenovo Thinkpad R400 Charger , “MSRP is $899.99 for the E Series E14P Future Sounds My Connect Studio Package, whereas pricing for other laptops in the Vaio E series ranges from only $449.99 to $699.99.Ultimately, though, My Connect Studio will also run on non-PC devices such as smartphones, according to LL Cool J.Lenovo ThinkPad X61 Tablet PC Charger

The rapper also said that he’ll use My Connect Studio for recording at least one song on his next album, Lenovo 3000 N100 Charger , which is now in progress.Music on the album will be great for listening to in the car or while cleaning the house, for instance, as opposed to the many tunes these days that are geared mainly to “earbuds,” LL Cool J elaborated. Gaming on a high-definition screen is awesome, but imagine playing your favorite shooter or fighting game in 3D. We played Assassin’s Creed II, F.E.A.R., and Mafia 2 to put the VAIO F 3D to the test. Lenovo 3000 C200 Charger , To date, there are more than 400 games that support Nvidia 3DVision. Some games, such as Mafia 2, support full 3D, while others, such as Assassin’s Creed 2 and F.E.A.R., have Excellent or Good ratings. Gamers can check out their games’ 3D compatibility in either the Nvidia Control Panel or on the company’s website.Lenovo 3000 N200 Charger

Assassin’s Creed is listed under Good in the Nvidia control panel, and the expansive city of Venice was even more awe-inspiring with the added depth. LENOVO 3000 G400 Charger , During the flying missions, it seemed like Ezio was going to fly right into our laps. Parrying during sword fights sent an opponent’s sword jutting out towards us. The creepy factor on F.E.A.R. (which is listed under Excellent compatibility) also turned up a notch, especially when we encountered our first Abomination. IBM FRU 93P5029 , Mafia 2 is one of the 16 games that’s currently listed as Nvidia 3D Vision Ready. Playing a shooter in full 3D can take some getting used to. We soon became fully immersed, dodging when our character was pinned down in frantic shoot-outs.Lenovo ThinkPad X60 Tablet PC Charger

Weighing less than 1.5kg, you’ll hardly notice the Y Series in your bag,LENOVO 3000 G410 Charger , but it’s also surprisingly usable for such a small laptop. Like Sony’s larger Vaios, it has Chiclet-style keys that are spaced apart. The only difference here is they’ve been reduced in size slightly in order to fit. Flat on a desk, we had no trouble typing at full speed. The touchpad is also on the small side, but the smooth surface made navigating the desktop very easy. The touchpad buttons are equally small, but they’re perfectly sprung with great tactile feedback. LENOVO 3000 Y410 Charger , We appreciated Sony’s decision to use a 1,366×768 screen resolution, rather than the lower 1,024×600 usually found in netbooks; it certainly made browsing the web easier as we had to do less scrolling per page. Overall image quality was average, with reasonable screen brightness and accurate enough colours. The glossy screen finish was very reflective, which is made worse by the limited amount of screen tilt available.IBM FRU 92P1171 , Unsurprisingly, sound quality isn’t one of the Y series’ strong points; the very small speakers produce quiet audio that lacks any presence. At maximum volume, high notes began to distort and there was no audible bass. If you want to watch a movie, listen to music or stream video from the internet, you’ll be better off with headphones.IBM FRU 92P1173

IBM FRU 92P1173 Charger

To look at, the Y Series’ fantastic design puts many other small laptops to shame.IBM FRU 92P1227 , The bright pink lid might not be to everyone’s taste, but you can at least specify a different colour if you buy directly from Sony’s website. The side-mounted power button in particular looks great and also prevents accidental shut-downs when reaching for a shortcut key. With the exception of the two memory card readers at the front of the unit, the side panels also contain all the ports: three USB, HDMI, headphone and microphone jacks are all to be expected, but the VGA port is a nice inclusion for older displays – many laptops omit this port entirely now.IBM FRU 93P5027 , At roughly £430, the Y series is around £100 more than the average netbook, but it’s clear why. The more powerful processor and extra memory make a huge difference in Windows and the increased screen resolution makes web browsing much easier. It’s just as portable and has a better than average battery life, which makes it ideal for working on the move. IBM FRU 93P5028

Sony may be late to the Ultrabook party, IBM ASM 92P1168 , but it’s sure to make quite an impression with its debut device – the Sony Vaio T13. Not just because the first Ultrabook-branded Vaio machine looks like an incredibly desirable bit of tech. But, because Sony has managed to cram in a decent hardware setup and a wealth of features into a stylish slimline chassis that comes in comfortably inside £700/$1,000. IBM ASM 92P1170 , This Sandy Bridge-configured Sony Vaio T13 isn’t the cheapest Ultrabook that we’ve seen – that honour belongs to the Novatech nFinity 2367 Plus – but the Sony Vaio brand carries so much weight that we’re delighted to see it priced as it is.But while the price tag is fairly low, the design and build is anything but. Despite it not being as sleek as the Dell XPS 13, as pretty as the Asus Zenbook UX31, or as feature-ridden as the HP Envy 14 Spectre, the 13.3-inch Sony Vaio T Series is a seriously slick machine with a robustness and sharp finish unlike any other Ultrabook we’ve seen.IBM ASM 92P1172

At 17.8mm thick, and with a weight of 1.6kg, the Sony Vaio T13 is certainly not the skinniest Ultrabook on the catwalk, but its square, almost industrial edges set it apart from its rivals. IBM ASM 92P1174 , A MacBook clone it is not – although that’s a crime that more than one of the Ultrabook brigade are guilty of. You might also likeBest Ultrabook: 16 top thin and lights for 2012. The housing is made up of a mix of aluminium and magnesium alloy, with the lid’s brushed aluminium finish creating an instant sense of excitement. The all-over silver design scheme helps to create an industrial and rugged impression for the Sony Vaio T13. And this impression isn’t misleading either – the lid and screen, while thin, are plenty sturdy, and it should be safe enough in your bag for a day out and about. IBM FRU 42T4505 , This £679 version of Sony’s first foray into the Ultrabook market is packing a second generation Intel Core 13 processor in the UK. There are third generation Ivy Bridge versions now available but these will cost you at least £100 more. So, because of its appealing price-point, we feel that this particular model deserves a standalone review.IBM FRU 42T4506

In the US, the Sony Vaio T13 range starts with a third generation Intel Core i5 version for $769.99, or a Core i7 version for $150 more. IBM FRU 92P1163 , We will, of course, bring you a comprehensive review of the Ivy Bridge-powered Sony Vaio T13 Ultrabooks in due time.Powering the Sony Vaio T13 that we reviewed was a Sandy Bridge i3-2367M dual-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz, with Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics and 4GB of RAM. With the Ivy Bridge revolution now in full swing you would be forgiven for having reservations about forking out for an Ultrabook with, essentially,IBM FRU 92P1165 , outdated tech on board. If that is the case, then you do have the option of upgrading to either an Intel Core i5-3317U chip for £100 extra, or an i7-3517U one for £140 more. As we said, in the US the third generation Intel Core i5-3317U version, clocked at 1.70GHz, costs $769.99, and the third generation Core i7-3517U model, at 1.90GHz, costs $919.99.IBM FRU 92P1167

HP COMPAQ NX9005 Battery

There is support to increase the RAM from 3 Gb to 4 Gb and the Hard Disk Drive runs at 7200 RMP so it is by no means weak, it’s just not completely buff either.HP 530 Battery , The Compaq 8000 Elite Series is a spartan range of office designed desktops, harnessing power and efficiency for no nonsense work. The quad core capability connects nicely with the Nvidia Quadro discrete graphics, a superior choice rather than Intel’s Integrated Graphics which only has the benefit of being newer. The Ultra-Slim system is only superior in compactness, spec wise it falls behind the Small Form Factor and Convertible Minitower models.HP 510 Battery , If you require a condensed machine this is the one for you, though it is only half of what the systems are.The generic design problems that cross the series are the lack of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, both of which many are unable to do without.

For operating systems the 8000 Elites run either Windows 7 or Windows XP, you are licensed for only one of these systems to run either your older software well or only the latest up to date programmes.HP Mini 2140 Battery , There are few distinguishing features between the two models in HP’s 8100 Series and as you may have assumed the Small Form Factor is the more compact of the two.HP has designed numerous long lasting and reliable machines, as business desktops go the plain exterior may appear vulgar to some but the 8100′s are efficient in design and function, and have been reduced in size to save office space.HP 2133 Mini-Note Battery

These systems are marketed at the business user who requires more then email and word processing from their system. HP OmniBook XE4500 Battery , With that in mind HP has made available a range of premium processors up to the mighty Intel i7 Core, which is not easily exhausted by even the most intensive of tasks. The design teams have made a more then modest selection of ports available, including 10 USB 2.0 slots which allow as much expansion as you will require, and the range of parallel ports, serials and eSATA which cover any alternative hardware you would need to integrate. HP Pavilion ZE4530 Battery , What is uncommon in business desktops is the integrated speakers, though they are nothing to brag about in the 8100′s in terms of sound quality, they are a handy feature for listening to presentations or conferencing. Having both Bluetooth and wireless missing is quite a problem since they are standard on a lot of machines. However, since some offices tend to use wired connections this may not be an issue at all. HP Pavilion ZE4900 Battery , The other let down is the graphics card which is far too slow to handle video editing or even mid-level gaming. The HP B Series for business users offers a variety of models specialising in processor, memory and security.HP Pavilion ZE5000 Battery

When it comes to audio, Altec Lansing speakers are built-in, but their tinny sound isn’t much better than standard issue non-branded stereo speakers.
42T4930 , The HP g6 is a fantastic value laptop, which does cut corners on build quality, but sets new standards of how we can enjoy media and games on a tight budget. The AMD processor that comes with the HP Pavilion DM1 streams 780 HD video well, this processor is part of AMD’s Fusion line integrated graphics with the CPU which conserves power and improves general speed of the laptop. 42T4931 , You can also by the DM1 with an Intel Dual Core processor, which will assist with multitasking a viable option if your workload is intensive and you find yourself often running more than one application. With HP’s DM1 you also get a 6-cell battery which is reasonable for a portable system, you’ll get well over 3 hours use on this, and for lighter internet surfing even more.
42T4931 , Our major issue with the HP DM1 was touchpad sensitivity, granted with all new computers adjustments need to be made, but it was very trying getting a decent level of sensitivity, and for such a vital feature, it was rather irritating. Upon purchase you will also want to check which programmes are automatically being installed, bloatware will well and truly slow you down.HP has entered into the 3D market with the new and improved HP Envy 17 3D laptop.42T4806

3D technology is relatively new to the consumer laptop market but 2011 looks set to be the year of triple dimensions and HP has embraced the fact whole-hearted. 42T4807 , We take a look and see if it’s worth the hype. The HP Envy 17 3D used the latest ATI graphics that work with the active shutter glasses to produce a 3D image. All the 3D technology is built into the machine so no dongles or external gadgetry is necessary! The 17.3 inch Full HD widescreen display makes the movie viewing experience a pleasure, even with the unflattering 3D glasses on your face – they are quite comfortable! 42T4814 , The HP Envy 17 3D can come with high processing power in the form of the Intel Core i7 chip, as well as 4 Gb of RAM and a 500 Gb hard drive. Connectivity is good, as it sports a VGA, HDMI, 1 USB 3.0 and 3 USB 2.0 ports as well as Bluetooth and an HD webcam.42T4815 , The addition of Blu-ray Disc drive and Beat Audio just completes the package, making the HP Envy 17 3D an all-round entertainment system. The cherry on top is the design. Clearly taking inspiration from the Apple MacBook Pro, the chassis is brushed aluminium with rounded black chiclet keys.57Y4564

Secondly it’s pretty chunky at 12Kg – it’s obviously not going to be feather-light when a 23 inch screen is part of the construction – but any wall mountings would have to be into a good solid wall. L09M6D13 , The HP G62 Series notebook is designed to be an environmentally conscious laptop that also delivers on performance and quality. It is EPEAT silver qualified and uses a screen design that claims to require less energy whilst keeping mercury out of landfills. However we have been unable to put these claims to the test. What we can say is that the HP G62 Series delivers a good all round laptop performance, with a clear display and good range of features, without coming down on the wrong side of £400.
What we have here is a very nice mainstream laptop.PP31AT128 , The HP G62-a22SA isn’t going to blow anyone away with wafer thin looks and brain melting processing speeds, but what it does is deliver a comprehensive solid and reliable all-round experience.SU2300

The design is silver with HP’s signature patterned engraving across the palm rest – giving the HP G62 Series a nice and contemporary feel. HP Pavilion dv9200 Battery , This is augmented by an attractive black trim around the screen that contrasts nicely with the chassis. The 15.6 inch display itself has a fairly standard 1366 X 768 pixel resolution, but with added HD and something called BrightView it’s capable of delivering a perfectly acceptable picture for viewing movies and videos online. This is backed up by a solid, if unspectacular, Intel HD graphics card with up to 1274 Mb of available graphics memory. HP Pavilion dv9100 Battery , Webcam and Integrated microphone are included so Skypeing your friends is hassle free. The Intel Pentium P6000 is not a high spec processor. In these days of Intel Dual Core and iCore processors you may be on the lookout for something more contemporary under the hood. This really depends what you want your laptop to do.I don’t think that the HP G62 Series will make a spectacular gaming machine and nor will it be suitable for running multiple high spec graphic design software. HP Pavilion dv9000 Battery

HP Pavilion dv9000 Battery

Slim line – that’s an understatement; I’ve owned bigger laptops. 121000793 , At just over 7Kg and measuring 112 x 389 x 308 mm the Pavilion s56450 would slot seamlessly into any office. In keeping with its unobtrusive build, it’s very quiet, with the fan only a gentle whirr, and quite plain, with just a glossy black front. It’s surprisingly fast for its intended purpose – office work, web browsing and watching HD content, all handled by the nippy Intel Core i3.As an office machine it’s well supplied with six USB ports, and there’s room for upgrade with one PCI-Express 16x low profile slot and one PCI-Express slot free inside. 121000792 , So a wireless and graphics upgrade would be pretty simple to do yourself. Despite the price tag of around £500 there’s no display included so you have to budget for that, which makes it pricier than its competitors.Although we have no problem with the Intel Pentium processor, is a tad underpowered with just integrated graphics. There’s also no HDMI input, just VGA and DVI sockets. 121000791 , Finally HP Lightscribe – for decorating the CDs you burn – why wont HP let it die? It’s a pretty redundant piece of software, on top of the software already crammed onto the machine. The HP TouchSmart 600-1220uk is HP’s top of the line touchscreen all-in-one, and it’s crammed full of premium components, with a price tag to match.l09s6d21

Lenovo l09s6d21 Battery

We get physical with it and see if we can be converted to big-screen, touch-screens. 57y6309 , The touchscreen experience is great with HP’s oversize widgets making it easy to select programs and applications.HP thankfully has also beefed up the specifications from previous models thankfully and a Intel Core i5 replaces the older Intel Core 2 Duo. In practice this means a fast responsive experience with no lag.The 23 inch screen is full HD and gives great picture quality. 57Y4565 , HP has also crammed in a VGA, HDMI, S-Video and TVin so there’s no shortage of other devices you can hook up to use on that screen. It’s also outfitted with a rather generous 1.5 Tb hard drive and a Blu-ray, and we have to say that the latter looked stunning on the screen.
The TouchSmart 600-1220uk is expensive, very expensive. 57Y6354 , A touchscreen, Core i5 processor, Blu-ray drive and a 1.5 Tb hard drive are never going to be cheap, but a RRP of £1,399 are a big leap just for the ability to touch up your computer.L09M3P13

Although ATI produces crisp visuals that we cannot complain about, it is not as widely supported as NVIDIA, with only around a dozen games that are currently compatible. HP Pavilion ZE5100 Battery , This model is quite weighty, which is only a down side if you plan on going travelling with a 3D laptop, otherwise it is more of a replacement desktop entertainment machine.Battery life also drains quite fast, but with such a high spec machine this will be expected. It lasted just over 2 hours without being plugged in, so only just enough time to watch a film.HP’s Pavilion p6675uk isn’t going to get anyone very excited, but hey not everyone needs a sports car of a computer, often a family saloon will do. We check out whether it’s a worthwhile home and office workhorse.
HP COMPAQ NX9040 Battery , The Pavilion p6675uk squeezes some good components into that glossy black casing. The Core i5 may not quite reach the standard of die-hard gamers who long for a Core i7, but it performs brilliantly at office tasks, browsing and photo editing.HP COMPAQ NX9030 Battery

HP COMPAQ Business Notebook NX9030 Charger

There’s a good range of ports, including HDMI and Firewire alongside six USBs so you can hook up plenty of peripherals. HP COMPAQ NX9020 Battery , There’s a large (up to 1 Tb) hard disk drive, and it’s good to see HP bundling in a fast 7,200 RPM version, rather than the cheaper 5,400 RPM.There’s also 2 free PCI -express slots should you be feeling in an upgrading mood; a good idea if you want to fit a wireless card. It’s not radically interesting design but at least HP have kept it simple with a glossy black front, covered ports, standard matte black aluminium back. Tidy.
HP COMPAQ NX9010 Battery , There’s no display included in the price, which considering the competition from Dell, who have been slashing prices faster than an angry Norman Bates, seems ridiculous. It’s a solid home or office machine, but there’s more on offer out there.HP love to pre-install software on your machine, some of it might be useful, most of it you’ll probably want to uninstall. Enjoy. The HP Pavilion s5650uk is one of the slimmest desktop towers we’ve seen. So we were eager to see whether it was nifty little addition to the office or just too small and underpowered to be much use.HP COMPAQ NX9005 Battery

The series comes in three configurations, including the Convertible Minitower which is pretty much a larger version of the Small Form Factor and the Ultra-Slim which comes with slightly downgraded specs to allow for its small stature.
HP COMPAQ N1050v Battery , The major attraction of the 8000 desktop is the heightened security; the encrypted hard drive limits read/write of critical files offering greater protection to your secure data.HP has also taken the more environmentally responsible path substituting a lot of pollutant components with more eco-friendly ones. This is part of HP’s plan remove some of the more hazardous components entirely from its products by 2011.Rather then paying premium for the latest spec and receiving technology which is not entirely necessary nor economically viable, HP offers the choice of a slightly downgraded system that has hightened multitasking capabilities. With the Convertible Minitower and the Small Form Factor you are able to buy a machine with a quad core but a lesser processor, rather than a dual core with the latest processor. Smart computer shopping isn’t just about buying the most expensive machine you can afford.HP COMPAQ NX9000 Battery

Aspire 5600 Battery

Under all circumstances, the trackpad remained cool at just 77 Fahrenheit.Aspire 9420 Battery , The keyboard heats things up, with temperatures ranging from 86F in the lower-left corner, to 107F in the upper middle area. The worst offender, unsurprisingly, was the metal strip in between the keyboard, where hot air can escape the vents. Here, we saw temperatures rise up to 118F, which is pretty uncomfortable. I understand that this review may seem overly effusive – but it’s hard to deny that the MacBook Pro with Retina Display provides a superlative experience for that specific set of users who require what this machine provides.Aspire 9410Z Battery , The screen is nothing short of groundbreaking. Like they did with tablets and ultraportables, Apple has made super high resolution displays work, and it makes me happy – because it means that we’ll be seeing more and similar display from lower-priced competitors such as ASUS and Acer, and, eventually HP and Dell.Considering the technology packed inside, Aspire 9410 Battery , the rMBP is incredibly thin. It’s reasonably light, too, at 4.46 pounds. Battery life is impressive, within the confines of this technology envelope and size range; otherwise there have been other machines that meet and exceed it.Aspire 9400 Battery

Acer Aspire 9400 Series Battery

In addition to the XPS 13 and XPS 14 Ultrabooks, there’s also this newly out from Dell – the XPS 15. It’s bigger but more powerful than the others and starts from £100 more than the base XPS 14. Aspire 9300 Battery , For that, you get 8GB of RAM, an HD display, Nvidia graphics as standard and either an Intel Core i5-3210M or Core i7-3612QM. The Dell XPS 15 price starts at £1,149 or $1,299. The Core i7 XPS 15 is £1,299.Again, this model has much in common with the MacBook Pro – and the styling of the lid and base is very similar indeed – mostly due to the aluminium used. Aspire 7110 Battery , As you can see there’s an optical drive in addition to an SD slot (hidden behind the panel). We have to say that if we had to choose between this and the MacBook Pro, we’d be hard-pressed. Both are excellent laptops – while the XPS 15 gives the extra graphics and storage grunt that the XPS 14 sacrifices for weight; the XPS 15 is heavy at 2.6kg. virtually maching the MacBook pound-for-pound.Aspire 7100 Battery

As for the other ports, there’s Ethernet via a pull-down flap, plus HDMI, Display Port (both not featured in the MacBook Pro standard versions, you need adapters) plus three USB 3.0 ports. As for the display, this has the usual Dell quality about it, and it’s truly very bright at 350 nits. Acer Aspire 3820T-5851 Battery , The Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 display is powered by the 2GB variant of the Nvidia GT 640M. There’s edge-to-edge Gorilla Glass. The XPS 15 uses the same smart-yet-comfortable ‘chiclet’ keyboard design as the XPS 13 and XPS 14 and has a smooth glass trackpad. In use, we found this to be a little sticky for our liking, though we’re sure we’d get used to it. Acer Aspire 3820T-N52B Battery , There is some capacity for gestures, but expect these to work a lot better when you upgrade to Windows 8.Dell has put a 9 cell battery inside the XPS 14, though we’ll have to see how this performs when we test the laptop properly. The battery doesn’t seem to be user-replaceable, which is frustrating.Acer Aspire 3820TG Battery

Here is the XPS 14 up against its sibling, the XPS 15. Acer Aspire 3820TG-332G50na Battery , The XPS 15 is on the left. And here it is in the middle – the XPS 13 is on the right here and the XPS 15 towards this end, with the XPS 14 in the middle. The XPS 15 definitely steals a price march on the £1,499 MacBook Pro, even if Apple’s machine is slightly better fitted out with faster variants from Intel’s Core family. Still, Dell has put its flagpole in the ground; these are some of the best workhorse laptops we’ve yet seen at this price point.Dell’s XPS 13 has been one of our Ultrabook darlings for months,Acer Aspire 3820TG-334G32Mn Battery , but it’s now joined by two other siblings – the XPS 14 (which is available in an Ultrabook configuration) and the Dell XPS 15. The Dell XPS 14 price starts at £1,049 or $1,099. The XPS line has certainly come of age this year and these new models really point the way forward for Dell’s laptop strategy. However, while the XPS 13 represented real design innovation, these two new models do remind us of the MacBook Pro. If you think we’re being a little harsh, take a look at this photo of the top:And the side. Perhaps it’s the aluminium and magnesium finish, but we think buyers will think they’re rather similar too.Acer Aspire 3820TG-334G50n Battery

And it’s a little bit of a shame, because the XPS 14 and XPS 15 have a lot to shout about. Acer Aspire 3820TG-352G50n Battery , The XPS 14 is only a little thicker than Apple’s new retina Display MacBook Pro at just under 21mm. Dell really has got to grips with design these days and it’s producing some of the smartest portables around. See what we mean in the next few shots. As you can see, the XPS 14 doesn’t have an optical drive, though the bigger XPS 15 does. There’s an SD slot in the side instead.TravelMate 240 Battery , There’s also an option featuring a 3G mobile broadband slot – this has a leather-backed lid for better reception. It looks smarter than you’d think. Apparently this model doesn’t conform to the Ultrabook standard, presumably because of the chipset used. It’s also around 2.5mm thicker than the non-3G model. Here’s the underside, which matches that of the XPS 13. Aspire 5600 Battery , Spec-wise, the XPS 14 features various Ivy Bridge Intel Core processors up to Core i7-3517U. Most models will have the Intel HD 4000 graphics as standard, though the 1GB GT 630M from Nvidia is available as an option.TravelMate 250 Battery

Acer TravelMate 250 Series Charger

The XPS 14 uses the same smart-yet-comfortable key design as the XPS 13 and has a smooth glass trackpad. TravelMate 2500 Battery , In use, we found this to be a little sticky for our liking, though we’re sure we’d get used to it. There is some capacity for gestures, but expect these to work a lot better when you upgrade the XPS 14 to Windows 8.By the way, Dell calls it a ‘chiclet’ keyboard – not sure why – and it’s spill resistant. It’s also backlit. We find these keyboards very comfortable to type on.The screen is pin-sharp and is extremely bright at 400 nits – the XPS 14 features a 1600 x 900 display.TravelMate 2501 Battery , Dell’s newer displays have been very good indeed and we liked that on the XPS 13. The lid features edge-to-edge Gorilla Glass. As for memory and storage, you can choose from either 4GB or 8GB of RAM, while it looks like storage will come in two options – a 512MB SSD (which pushes the price into the expensive bracket at £1,579) in addition to a 32GB SSD plus 500GB hard drive (annoyingly this remains at the slow 5,400rpm speed rather than 7,200rpm).TravelMate 2504 Battery

The rMBP returns Apple’s class-leading multitouch glass trackpad to the fore. Acer aspire 5745g Battery , Sitting front and center, the large device makes using a touchpad a breeze. This is the only trackpad I can use and not constantly feel regret that it’s not a mouse. Some of that is due to the quality of the trackpad itself, but most of it has to do with the tight integration with OS X. Under Windows, the trackpad isn’t nearly as nice to use.Unlike standard desktop activities, gaming is much harder on the system’s hardware. Acer aspire 5745p Battery , The GPU has to render all sorts of geometries, and update all the pixels on the screen multiple times per second. As a result, all of that arcane high-res downsampling goes out the window when you start to play full-screened games. Games, instead, work just like they do on any other PC – some will support the native resolution, and those that don’t will have a lower resolution scaled up to the rest of the screen.Acer aspire 5745 Battery

So far, finding a game that can actually detect and run at the MacBook Pro’s native resolution is difficult. Acer travelmate 6495 Battery , Blizzard, with Diablo III, were a launch partner with Apple, and that title already supports it. Results are mixed: it looks great, or at least as good as Diablo III can look, but you’re not going to get a constant 30+ FPS when running with details up at 2880×1800. Knocking the resolution down a peg or two provides a silky smooth experience, however, and at just over 15 inches, the loss in quality is almost unnoticeable.Acer Aspire 3820 Battery , World of Warcraft can also run at the native Retina resolution, and this game, at least, doesn’t even stress the system. You can likely expect 60 FPS even when running at native res. The results Not too bad, according to WoW fans.Acer Aspire 3820T Battery

The new rMBP features Intel’s latest Ivy Bridge quad-core CPUs, an NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M CPU, 8GB of DDR3L SDRAM, and a 256GB SSD. Acer Aspire 3820T-3051 Battery , As a result, the performance really isn’t any slouch – comparing it to older MacBooks, this new MacBook Pro manages to best even the high-end 17-inch MacBook Pro that was sold up until a few days before this one launched. This shows in the impressive 11023 score that this baseline rMBP scored in Geekbench, a common OS X benchmarking program. PCMark 7 scored 5223, and 3DMark 11 delivered 2427 in the Performance preset. wPrime finished in 8.197 seconds. Acer Aspire 3820T-334G32n Battery , One area where Apple substantially improved performance over previous MacBook models was in the choice of solid state drive. This time around, the SSD scored blazing sequential read speeds of 455.8 MB/s and write speeds of 407.5 MB/s. Disk I/O doesn’t look like it’s going to be much of a problem in this batch.Acer Aspire 3820T-334G50n Battery

Acer Aspire 3820T-334G50n Battery

Despite all of this, the new MacBook Pro is experiencing growing pains thanks to its headlining feature – that Retina Display. Acer Aspire 3820T-5246 Battery , I mentioned earlier the supersampling Apple undertakes in order to deliver sharp, non-standard resolutions. It’s important to remember that the GPU being used inside of the new MBP barely supports the current resolution – these hyperresolutions employed as part of Apple’s supersampling effort have no scaling hardware (AnandTech has a tremendous piece about it). Between this and Apple’s custom scaling routines, there are certain instances where the new MacBook Pro lets us down – rapid screen refreshes of complex content, like browsing rich webpages, can suffer.Acer Aspire 3820TG-7360 Battery

Apple claims that you can expect about seven hours of Acer Aspire 3820TG-5462G64nss03 Battery life in the new machine in average use. What’s average use according to Apple That’s difficult to say, but for the most part, the company has been exceptionally reasonable in terms of predicting battery life for their various mobile devices. In light use, with the backlight at 50% (it can be pretty bright, so in many cases you won’t even need to use that much), you can expect to exceed Apple’s 7-hour running time. We scored 7 hours, 39 minutes of use in our battery tests – which are relatively light and, it’s worth noting, do not engage the discrete GPU.Acer Aspire 3820TG-5452G50nsse Battery , Any application that does will cause your battery life to plummet by comparison – and this is one reason why running the system in Windows will eat up your time away from an outlet. There doesn’t seem to be any support for GPU switching in that OS, meaning that the GT 650M is running constantly. At best, expect to cut off at least two hours of battery life, probably more. Acer Aspire 3820TG-482G64nss05 Battery , Since the new laptop is so much thinner than the previous model, the cooling system had to be completely redesigned in order to compensate for the same-ish thermals in a smaller case. New vents have been sliced into the bottom sides of the notebook – these complement the traditional MacBook vents around the plastic hinge cover.Acer Aspire 3820TG-434G64n Battery

In redesigning the MacBook Pro, not even the fan was left untouched. Acer Aspire 3820TG-432G50n Battery , Apple says that they pushed the blades on the cooling fan around so that their spacing was asymmetrical. The irregular spacing between the blades was introduced in order to split the fan noise up into several different frequencies, as opposed to stacking them all together. The new fan design is quiet. In a quiet room, you’ll be able to make out some noise, but in most cases, the notebook is unnoticeably quiet. As you ramp up the workload, the fans respond. Under heavy load, they’re definitely audible. Acer Aspire 3820TG-382G50nss04 Battery , It isn’t until you go back to using another computer that you realize how much different the fan noise is. The MacBook Pro isn’t some magically quiet notebook, (at least under heavy loads) but it does a good approximation thereof.Traditionally, Apple’s laptops have run on the hot side. That’s really something of an understatement – they can get positively toasty, and in this respect, the rMBP isn’t very different. I loaded up all four physical CPU cores and let the system run for five minutes straight before taking the temperatures.Acer Aspire 3820TG-372G50nss01 Battery

Amilo Pa 2510 Battery

It’s easy for us to recommend the newest MacBook Air, because it’s a fantastic machine.Amilo Li 1818 Battery , But, unlike this time last year, there are other impressive lightweight options out there. So be sure to check out our Best Ultrabook feature and reviews to see if the MacBook Air is the right ultra-portable notebook for you.Apple’s new MacBook Pro with Retina display takes a new look at the high-end, pro-user notebook. Launched at the Worldwide Developer’s Conference 2012 (WWDC 2012), it breaks with numerous traditions and leaves behind several legacy technologies. Amilo Li 1820 Battery , Although the Apple laptop shares a lot of features with the entry-level MacBook Air range, it gives a high-end performance and reinvents the pro-level notebook for graphic artists, photographers and video editors. The new Apple MacBook Pro’s most exciting new feature is, of course, the Retina display. With a 2880 x 1800 resolution at 220 pixels per inch, it crams over 5.1 million pixels into its 15.4-inch screen. That’s over three million more than an HD TV.Amilo Pa 1510 Battery

The pixel density is so high that at normal viewing distance, your eyes can’t distinguish between individual pixels, so text and images look really sharp and clear. Amilo Pi 2550 Battery , According to Apple, it’s the world’s highest resolution notebook display. Looking at a perfectly good monitor or notebook after using the Retina MacBook Pro can be a painful experience. Screens you were happy with before look second rate when you’ve seen the Retina display. Take a trip to your local Apple store or stockist and have a play on a MacBook Pro with a Retina display, then take a look at an iMac or non-Retina notebook. Amilo Pi 2530 Battery , The difference is astonishing.Of course, you only get the full benefit from a Retina display while using applications that have been optimised for it. Unoptimised apps are upscaled to prevent their tools and text appearing really small. They look fine until you compare them to optimised applications. Open a web page in both Safari (optimised) and Chrome (not optimised) on the Retina MacBook Pro, and Google’s browser looks really tatty next to Apple’s. Amilo Pi 2515 Battery , That’s not to say it’s actually tatty. Compare it to your regular screen and you see an upscaled app is no worse. But Retina-optimised applications are so clear and crisp they make everything else look shoddy.Amilo Pi 2512 Battery

Amilo Pi 2512 Battery

This time around, the keyboard isn’t quite as nice. It feels a lot like the keyboard from the MacBook Air lineup. Amilo Pi 1505 Battery , The backlighting is nice and even, with variable settings, including an automatic one. Like the MBA, however, the travel distance is just a bit less than ideal; the older MacBook Pros moved a little more. Most importantly, however, is that the keyboard still features zero flex. One other small point is the move of the power switch. Since the rMBP ships without an optical drive, just like the Airs, Apple pulled the eject button off of the keyboard and replaced with the power switch, just like the Airs.Amilo Pa 2510 Battery

There’s no discrete graphics option but, this being an Ivy Bridge setup, you are treated to integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000, which means graphic processing is twice as fast as the previous MacBook Air models. M9756, With 4GB of 1600MHz DDR3L RAM onboard – also a significant upgrade from the last MacBook Air – the performance is much slicker and impressive than the already-impressive 2011 MacBook Air range. Storing your HD media could be problematic, however, especially if you’re the type of person who likes to have extensive high-quality digital libraries everywhere you go. M9756G/A , The cheapest option offers just 64GB of flash storage, and our review model packed a mediocre 128GB. You can go up to 512GB of storage for a whopping £640/$800 extra, should money be no option. Many Ultrabooks now, such as the Sony Vaio T13 and the HP Envy 6, offer a dual SSD and HDD option – enabling more space while keeping the price down. M9756J/A , Apple has decided against moving parts in its MacBook Air laptops though, stating that complete flash storage is the key reason for the skinny notebook’s responsiveness.A1008

This flash storage, the company tells us, is up to four times faster than a traditional 5400rpm hard drive. A1061 , You certainly won’t hear us disagreeing or complaining about speed – the MacBook Air is lightening-quick. To call the 2012 Apple MacBook Air’s design identical to the last two is not entirely accurate. You may notice that the MagSafe power connection has been redesigned. MagSafe 2 is thinner and longer. M8403 , No – we’re not sure why either, but unless you’ve got a close affiliation with your old Mac power pack, you shouldn’t have a problem. There is an adapter that Apple will sell you for £9/$9.99 if you do intend to use your old power source. There’s now a USB 3.0 port duo – although this being Apple, there’s no blue marker to indicate them. It’s white and silver all the way. M8433 , Added to these there is a Thunderbolt port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. On the 13-inch 2012 MacBook Air, there’s enough space for an SD card reader as well, but there’s not one on the 11-inch model that we reviewed, unfortunately. The webcam has also been improved; it’s now a 720p HD one – so your FaceTime calls can be clearer than ever.M8433G

Apple states a M8433G/A battery life of five hours of wireless web browsing for the 11-inch model, and 7 hours for its bigger brother. In our test, which involved looping Full HD video on full brightness, it lasted just under four hours, which indicates that Apple’s estimate for normal usage is about right. The Intel i5 2012 11-inch MacBook Air model used for this review didn’t exactly set the world on fire with its raw benchmarking scores, M8433G/B , with results of around a third of what we recorded for the new MacBook Pro models, but they did record a significant improvement on the 2011 MacBook Air. General day-to-day performance is great, with all of the popular apps and programs that we tested – iPhoto, Preview, iTunes, QuickTime and Safari – running with a smoothness akin to a much more powerful computer. M8626G/A , So, despite the benchmark results, as an everyday notebook for what we’d call the ‘usual’ tasks, it’s not likely to let you down. You still won’t be able to seamlessly play the latest gaming titles, quickly edit HD movies or anything else too demanding – because of the lack of discrete graphics – but that’s not exactly the MacBook Air’s reason for being.M8956

Apple M8956 Battery

It’s designed to be a laptop that is easy to chuck in your bag and up to the task for anything you want to throw at it when you’re out and about. M8956G , As a work-based computer it excels with its instant-on feature and its 30-day standby life-span, and as an entertainment hub it thrives, with photos and HD movies looking great on its 1,366 x 768 display (1,440 x 900 for the 13-inch model). It’s the same glossy LED-backlit display as before, with the same slight shortcomings when it comes to viewing angles, but overall it’s a fantastic display that holds up well under bright lights. M9337G/A , The thin display seamlessly merges into the lid, making a combined height of 1.7cm (0.68 inches). And despite its puny demeanor, it’s actually pretty tough, with the hinges and flex proving more than capable of withstanding the odd stretch or knock. Audio is surprisingly good, if somewhat tinny, for such a small machine. It’s no audio dock replacement, that’s for sure, M9337G , but for video watching or the odd bit of background music streaming while you’re web surfing or working, it does the job nicely. Of course, you can always plug some external speakers or some headphones in, or even make use of Apple AirPlay through iTunes for a much richer audio experience.M9337

Using the MacBook Air is a real pleasure, with the isolated backlit keyboard still being about the best in the business. M8956J/A , Travel is minimal, but there is still enough bounce and response to invoke confidence while typing, and the intelligent backlight is great for when the sun starts to set.The latest computing news and features from TechRadar. Don’t worry about the backlights running the battery down when it’s light enough that they are not needed – the system is clever enough to switch them off when your environment is well lit. M8956G/A , The multi-touch gesture-tastic trackpad is also a delight to use, although fans of older Mac OS versions may have to do a bit of tweaking to get it performing like it did in the old days. We find the two-finger scrolling, three-finger swiping and four-finger pinching an incredibly intuitive way of controlling the system, though. iPad owners, in particular, will feel right at home. Siemens Amilo Li 3710 Battery , Booted up, you’ll find the MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.7.4 Lion – although an upgrade to 10.8 Mountain Lion will be available to download in July, free for new Mac owners.Apple will sell a shed-load of its 2012 MacBook Air models, despite the fact that the notebook is essentially a cutting-edge 2012 configuration dressed up in 2010’s smartest clothing. Siemens Amilo Li 3910 Battery

That’s not to say that the MacBook Air’s design is looking outdated or tired – far from it. Siemens Amilo Pi 3560 Battery , In a market place that is becoming ever more congested with slimline Ultrabooks, Apple is still leading the way in the cool stakes. But, unlike this time last year, there are serious rivals to Apple’s slimline stunner – from the likes of Asus, Samsung and Dell – so, although the MacBook Air continues to impress, there is a slight tinge of disappointment that Apple hasn’t unearthed another game-changing design for its lightweight notebook this time around. Siemens Amilo Pi 2515 Battery , We already loved the 2011 MacBook Air, so using this latest version, running all the new Intel bells and whistles, along with faster RAM and updated connection ports, was always going to be a great experience. It’s similar to Apple’s iPhone and iPad upgrades – you don’t realise how much room for improvement there is until you use a new Apple toy. Siemens Amilo Pi 2512 Battery , Our advice if you’re rocking a 2011 MacBook Air and you haven’t got the funds to update is don’t have a play on the new machines. Just ignore them whenever you walk past an Apple Store. Because, if you don’t use one, you’ll never know the difference; and if you do, you’ll be blown away by the performance improvements.Siemens Amilo Pi 1505 Battery

Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi 1505 Battery

Although rapid start and instant-on are features that are becoming ubiquitous across the laptop genre,Siemens Amilo Pa 2510 Battery , thanks to the increasing popularity of Ultrabooks, the MacBook Air seems to carry these features off better than any of its competitors. We love the MacBook Air design. We loved it in 2010 and we still love it now. Ultimately though, it’s an ageing chassis build and we would have liked to have seen more dramatic exterior changes than a newly shaped power adaptor and an upgrade from USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 for its dual connectivity ports. Siemens Amilo Pa 1510 Battery , With the Ultrabook revolution in full swing, we’re praying that Apple sets new standards with the next-generation MacBook Air models, with the sort of innovation that has blown us away in the past. While Apple doesn’t own the exclusive rights to the super-skinny notebook guest list any longer, it is still the market leader. But while the latest MacBook Air impressed us greatly, the wow-factor has worn off slightly, due to this being the third iteration of the current design.Siemens Amilo Li 1820 Battery , In a market becoming densely populated with slim-line laptops from a massive range of manufacturers, Apple still holds the trump card with the MacBook Air – but only just. And as such, we fully expect a design overhaul from the Cupertino-based tech giant in 2013.Siemens Amilo Li 1818 Battery

HP Pavilion dv8200 Battery

If you’re looking for the right laptop to help create your next masterpiece – whether it’s composing a new song, writing a new story or programming a new application – then there’s a strong case to be made for the HP Pavilion dv7-6c55sa. Lenovo ThinkPad X301 Charger , This 17-inch black-and-silver beast has both the processing and graphical power to help you create, and a good enough screen and speakers to enjoy the fruits of your labours. Like the Dell XPS 17, it’s unlikely you’ll be taking the HP Pavilion dv7 away from your desk and the safety of the AC adapter for too long. It weighs a portly 3kg and the battery only managed to keep alive for 182 minutes during our high-stress benchmark test. Physically, it’s an imposing machine with a large, black chassis. Lenovo ThinkPad X200 Charger , We couldn’t find any degree of flex and traditional weak points – the optical drive and screen hinges feel very solidly built. The keyboard has a numeric keypad added on and each key feels nicely weighted and well-sized. HP’s standard keyboard is very similar to that found on an Apple MacBook, although we’d say the travel is slightly shallower. If you’re a writer and spend hours hunched over your keyboard then you’ll appreciate the firm keys and sizable trackpad here.Lenovo ThinkPad X200s Charger

Power is handled courtesy of a quad-core Intel Core i5-2450M and a more-than-generous 8GB of RAM.Lenovo ThinkPad X201 Charger , This, coupled with the Nvidia GT630M GPU, means the HP Pavilion dv7 can handle pretty much any creative software you throw at it. Loading up Photoshop, Dreamweaver or ACID Pro is easy and the dv7 comes with Evernote, Snapfish and Blio already installed. While a 17.3-inch screen might be too much for some users, we found it extremely useful when we had several windows open at once and needed extra screen real estate. Lenovo ThinkPad X201i Charger , The 1,600 x 900 pixel resolution isn’t quite Full HD, but the difference is negligible because the screen is bright and colour reproduction fantastic. And, if you feel you want even more screen space, you can always use either the HDMI or VGA connection to hook up a second monitor.Lenovo 3000 Y500 Charger

Sound quality is just as impressive and the dv7 comes with Dr Dre’s Beats Audio technology fitted as standard. Lenovo 3000 Y510 Charger , It’s difficult to miss the Beats branding on the speaker grille above the keyboard and at the top left corner of the screen. The tangible benefit is an extra subwoofer on the underside of the laptop that gives the bass a mighty kick. A dedicated Beats hotkey on the chassis would have been a nice addition, but unfortunately doesn’t exist. However, there is a fingerprint scanner that will allow you to lock the laptop and open it with just a sweep of your finger. HP Pavilion N6403 Battery , Safer and quicker than passwords, this is a nice feature that gives you that extra reassurance that your confidential documents will stay that way. A search for a creativity-driven laptop is a search for a laptop that can handle pretty much everything you throw at it, and the HP Pavilion dv7 fits that description. Neither the most powerful nor the most expensive 17-inch machine we’ve seen, HP Pavilion N6404 Battery , the dv7 nonetheless excels and is one we happily recommend for anyone on a creative course.Like its big brother, the HP Envy 6, the 14-inch HP Envy 4 is an affordable Ultrabook with good looks and sound, priced at £650 in the UK and $800 in the US.HP Pavilion N6490 Battery
However, we noticed a couple of niggles during usage that we haven’t encountered on other recent Ultrabooks such as the Acer Aspire S3 or Dell XPS 13. HP Pavilion N6490 Battery , The question with the HP Envy 4 is whether its excellent media credentials and great price are enough to ignore a couple of minor flaws. HP’s earlier Ultrabook effort, the HP Envy Spectre, was nudging at the limits of Intel’s strict guidelines on Ultrabook dimensions with a 20mm chassis. But the HP Envy 4 is a much more portable option, weighing only 1.8kg (3.86lbs) and measuring a backpack-friendly 340 x 235 x 18mm (13.38 x 9.28 x 0.78 inches) – it’s not a machine you’ll have trouble carrying around all day.Compaq Evo N1050V Battery , The 214 minute battery life is a middling score and, to be honest, could have been better. To be fair to HP though, we ran the battery down with a high-performance stress test. If you keep your usage conservative you should be able to squeeze more than five hours of use from this Ultrabook. The smaller size does mean a slight decrease in power, however, and the Intel Core i3 processor inside the HP Envy 4 won’t touch the HP Envy 6’s Core i5 muscle.Compaq Evo N1010V Battery

Compaq Evo N1010V Battery

You can upgrade the processor inside the HP Envy 4 if you wish, but this is a matter of personal preference and bank balance – part of the appeal of the HP Envy 4 is value. HP Pavilion dv8300 Battery , And, even with the Core i3 processor, we found it coped remarkably well with all our software requirements. Outwardly the HP Envy 4 has the all-black cool of the HP Envy series. The bright red Beats Audio logo is evident on the HP Envy 4’s speaker grill and, like the HP Envy 6, it has the same brushed metallic finish and rubberised red coating on the underside and around the edge. The Intel Core i3-2367M processor is clocked at 1.4GHz, which is hardly blinding – although we did find the 6GB DDR3 RAM added a bit of cavalry to the HP Envy 4’s performance. HP Pavilion dv8200 Battery , Even so, with the rollout of Ivy Bridge-toting devices gathering momentum, we’re a little concerned how the HP Envy 4 will hold up against other laptops two years from now. It scored a respectable 4,928 in our Cinebench 10 benchmarking tests and coped well with multitasking, but if you need serious grunt work from your Ultrabook, there are better choices out there.HP Pavilion dv8100 Battery

Don’t expect to be loading up detailed graphics editors or rocking 2012’s biggest gaming titles, either. HP Pavilion dv8000t Battery , The HP Envy 4 is only equipped with the Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated GPU. It’ll keep up with movies and web streaming, but anything much more complicated is likely to strain it too far. You won’t find any kind of optical drive on the HP Envy 4, but it does include the requisite ports and connections. If you want to use a second monitor, then you’ll need to use HDMI (there’s no VGA), and the three USB ports can be used for adding extra peripherals. HP Pavilion dv8000 Battery , Somewhat disappointingly, these are all USB 2.0 ports, rather than USB 3.0, which can read/write at 10 times the speed and is, like Ivy Bridge, becoming a standard feature. This omission is again a way of keeping down the cost of the HP Envy 4 and making it affordable, a lesson no doubt learned from the £1,100/$1,400 HP Envy Spectre. Rounding out the connectivity is an Ethernet port and SD card slot for expanding on the 500GB of storage.

The Fujitsu Lifebook AH531 is a perfectly capable machine that will offer basic users the experience they’re looking for at a bargain price,Fujitsu FPCBP144 , but we can’t help noticing its shortcomings – like battery life – compared with some of the other mid-range laptops. The Lifebook AH531’s design is unremarkable but sufficient. There’s a glossy black shine to the lid that looks good, but proves susceptible to marks and scratches. Even though we weren’t enamoured with the design, it does feel solidly built, with very little flex around the keyboard or the optical drive. Fujitsu FPCBP144AP , We were pleased to see that a significant improvement has been made with the keyboard on the AH531. It fails to compete with the likes of the Lenovo B570, but there is a surprising amount of travel on the keys that makes typing more comfortable than you’d think from looking at it. There’s also a dedicated numeric keypad to the right of the main keyboard, but it’s small and slightly cramped. That’s nothing compared to the touchpad though, which is almost comically tiny and quite difficult to use.FUJITSU SIEMENS-S26391-F2592-L500

The 15.6-inch widescreen display is bright and sharp.FUJITSU SIEMENS BTP-C0K8 , Images are well-reproduced, although some colours (particularly reds and oranges) appear a little washed out. There’s a slight blueish tinge that we didn’t see on the likes of the Lenovo or the Compaq, but to be fair, the sharpness of the picture is excellent. The screen boasts a pixel resolution of 1,366 x 768 and is perfectly suitable for watching 720p HD videos on YouTube or iPlayer. Fujitsu FPCBP145 , We were pleasantly surprised to see that Fujitsu has given the Lifebook AH531 an expansive 500GB of onboard storage space. If you’re planning on getting rid of your DVD collection in favour of downloadable content, you’ll have space for plenty on this laptop. The Fujitsu fared well in our tests, and more or less matched the Lenovo B570 for both graphics and central processing. Fujitsu FMVNBP178 , We had several web pages open, music playing and a couple of Word documents on the go simultaneously, and didn’t have any trouble switching between them quickly and smoothly.Fujitsu FMVNBP177

The Lifebook AH531 boasts 4GB of memory, which is the minimum you should really be looking for. Fujitsu FMVNBP146 , It’s not short on connectivity either, boasting 802.11n Wi-Fi (the fastest available), Bluetooth, three USB ports, and HDMI and VGA connections for external monitors. The earlier iteration of the Fujitsu Lifebook AH530 suffered from a below-par Fujitsu CP293550-01 battery life, but that doesn’t appear to be the case here. We subjected the AH531 to the same tests as all the other laptops we test, and it sailed through with a commendable score of 179 minutes. This was better than the previous Lifebook AH530, and with sensible usage we would expect the Fujitsu to perform well away from the AC adapter.Find out more about What Laptop, Tablet and Smartphone magazine The Fujitsu Lifebook AH531 isn’t a bad choice for a budget laptop and we would definitely choose it over the Compaq Presario CQ57 and the HP 620. FUJITSU SIEMENS SMP-SFS-SS-26C-06 , It’s definitely more of a contender than the previous Lifebook and the new keyboard makes it a good bet for frequent typists. Aside from the slight fade in the screen colour, this isn’t a bad choice if you’re on a budget and looking to pick up a new laptop.FUJITSU SIEMENS S26391-F405-L840

FUJITSU SIEMENS S26391-F405-L840 Battery

Lenovo’s well-equipped B570 comes in a range of incarnations. Lenovo Thinkpad T400 Charger , The budget model we have here sports stripped-down components, but retains the great keyboard, solid build quality and security features of the pricier models. For business users this is perhaps the best choice here, but for someone who wants to use their laptop for play as well as work, there are better choices in the range such as the Core i5 powered version of the B570. The plain black chassis puts function firmly before form. Lenovo Thinkpad T400 Charger , The tough, ridged plastic withstands scuffs, and the firm lid protects the screen from damage. Although this isn’t the heaviest laptop we’ve seen, at 2.4kg it’s also not ideal for regular travel, although the 157-minute battery life can keep you working on short journeys. Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops are known for their great keyboards, and this quality has trickled down to its budget range. The B570’s isolation-style keyboard features well-spaced buttons that move smoothly, quietly and accurately.FUJITSU SIEMENS S26391-F400-L400

The huge touchpad and mouse buttons are pleasing to use too, and the pad’s textured finish makes it easy to find when typing. Lenovo Thinkpad T61 Charger , The wide design suits the screen’s dimensions and enables you to scroll from one side to the other without removing your finger from the touchpad. The screen is a good one, and renders photos and videos nicely. Lenovo has gone with a glossy Super-TFT coating, so the colour reproduction is sharp with excellent contrast. As ever though, this kind of shiny coating is a double-edged sword, as you’ll discover if you try to use this laptop in very bright light. Lenovo Thinkpad T61p Charger , The ageing Pentium processor still functions well, and helps to keep the price down. The CPU is backed up by 4GB of memory, which keeps programs running smoothly. It features an Intel HD Graphics card, but since it relies on the CPU the experience isn’t comparable with a Sandy Bridge machine. You’ll be able to manage the basics, but not 3D games or movie editing. Lenovo Thinkpad T61u Charger , This laptop’s business credentials mean there are several useful security features to keep your files safe. A fingerprint scanner offers protection from unauthorised access, while pre-installed Lenovo software enables you to encrypt sections of the hard drive to keep files hidden. Lenovo 3000 C100 Charger

This might not be of much significance if you don’t plan to use your laptop for business, but the extra security is a nice bonus. Lenovo ThinkPad X300 Charger , You also get a comprehensive selection of connectivity ports, including three USB slots, HDMI and VGA connections, and an eSata port that can double as a fourth USB. For connecting to the internet, there’s the choice of Gigabit Ethernet or 802.11n Wi-Fi, plus Bluetooth connectivity. The B570 is a well built machine, and offers good value for money in terms of usability and performance. Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 Charger , However, it’s a tailored purchase more suitable for someone looking for a business or work laptop than a general purpose machine. This business-like approach extends to the design – jet black with sharp angles and a fantastic keyboard – perfect if you plan to be typing a lot of business reports, or using the numeric keypad for databases and spreadsheets. If those are your key buying criteria then you’ll like the B570, but we feel there are better all-rounders out there.Lenovo 3000 Y510a Charger

Aspire 1690 Battery

Acer’s inventive Iconia laptop falls into that exclusive category we sometimes call executive laptops. Extensa 4100 Battery , These are typically high-priced, highly designed systems that look great on a CEO’s desk or in the first-class airline lounge. But they’re also usually underpowered, overpriced, and too reliant on gimmicks that offer little in the way of actual utility. The high-concept feature that sets the Iconia apart is actually two: two 14-inch touch screens. Instead of a screen and a keyboard, the Iconia ditches the keyboard for a second screen, which can be used either as an extended desktop or for a virtual keyboard. Extensa 3000 Battery , (We’ve seen a similar concept before, but with dual 7-inch screens, in the Toshiba Libetto W100.)In practice, it works better than you might expect. Onscreen typing is still nowhere near as intuitive as the real thing, but a few generations of iPhones and iPads have trained us to tap-type without too much trouble, at least for short writing tasks. The experience is much closer to typing on an iPad than typing on one of the many Windows tablets we’ve tried over the years–and that’s a good thing.Extensa 2300 Battery

There were still frustrations with the Iconia, however.Aspire 5510 Battery , The onscreen keyboard had a hint of a lag, although it would probably only affect the fastest of touch typists. The onscreen touch pad is too small, and it lacks the kind of touch gestures a purely software touch pad could easily offer. And, most annoyingly, the CPU is one of Intel’s last-generation Core i5 processors. By moving up to the current generation of CPUs, the Iconia could have faster performance, longer Aspire 5000 Battery life, and better graphics. One final positive note: unlike other so-called executive laptops we’ve seen, such as Dell’s Adamo XPS, the Iconia is arguably reasonably priced, at $1,199; it’s not a budget system by any means, but it’s less than we’d expect to pay for two 14-inch touch screens. The Acer Iconia packs its dual screens into an unassuming package.Aspire 3500 Battery , The thick, heavy chassis has a light bronze lid with black accents, and is not nearly as sleek as this week’s other high-end laptop, the Samsung Series 9. Boxy to a fault, we can only imagine the engineering required to fit the two 14-inch displays in safely. The Iconia feels sturdy enough, but it’s also too heavy and bulky to easily tote around.Aspire 3000 Battery

Acer Aspire 3000 Battery

Flipping the clamshell open, it’s almost like looking at two iPads joined together at the center hinge.Aspire 1683 Battery , Both screens have glossy edge-to-edge glass with black bezels and no other buttons, controls, or accessories (except for a tiny pinhole-style Webcam above the top screen). The hinge folds all the way to 180 degrees, so both screens can lie flat against the table, although that does block the bottom-mounted speakers. From our experience, there’s no difference between the two displays,Aspire 1685 Battery , but only the bottom one uses a 10-finger input gesture to pop up the onscreen keyboard. To get to that keyboard, either touch all10 fingers lightly on the bottom screen, rest your palms on where the palm-rest would normally be, or hit the dedicated physical keyboard button located on the side of the left hinge. Aspire 1689 Battery , The pop-up keyboard that results is similar to what you’d see on a horizontal iPad, but it is bigger, with generous letter keys and large Enter, Shift, and arrow keys. A few customization options are available, including larger or smaller F-keys and the overall key pitch.Aspire 1693 Battery

It’s not that Clear-Fi is necessarily a bad media manager app, but people are more likely to stick with what they know, Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820T-7633 Battery , be it iTunes, Windows Media Player, VLC, or online services such as Spotify or Amazon Cloud Music (the play/pause buttons won’t work on online services like that, but the volume controls will).Another reason you might skip Clear-Fi is that it’s built around the concept of sharing your media across your home network, but only if all the devices on your network come from Acer–you’d need to be sharing content from your Acer laptop to your Acer tablet to your Acer phone, for example. Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-334G32Mn Battery , We’ve seen other companies hamper their network sharing/management applications in the same way; no one wants to feel like they need to buy all their gear from the same company to take advantage of promised features. The biggest problem we had with the touch-pad remote is that it didn’t work particularly well as an actual touch pad. The surface feels sticky under your finger, and we had to crank the sensitivity all the way up in the Windows menu to get a reasonable level of responsiveness. There’s a large left/right button bar beneath the touch pad, but there’s no way we could find to right-click from the pad itself, which is a problem if you’re using it from several feet away.Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-334G50Mn Battery

The giant 18-inch display, with a native resolution of 1,920x,1080 pixels, is a real highlight on the system. Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-374G50Mn Battery , The screen is covered by edge-to-edge glass for a clean look, and is made of Corning’s scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass, the same as is found on the iPad. Off-axis viewing was reasonable, and the big, bright display looked great for video and games. The 5.1 speaker system was louder and deeper than the speakers of the average laptop, but there’s still no substitute for a big pair of air-moving speaker cones. The good: The Acer Aspire One 722-BZ608 is affordable for an 11-inch ultraportable, and can stream video better than an Atom Netbook. It also comes with plenty of RAM and a roomy 500GB hard drive. Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-374G50Mnks Battery , The bad: The 722-BZ608 has an uncomfortable keyboard and an underpowered AMD processor compared with other 11-inchers we’ve seen. The bottom line: The Acer Aspire One 722-BZ608 is a budget-priced 11-inch laptop that’s more powerful than a Netbook, but not as fast as some higher-priced 11-inch alternatives. Better options are out there for a little more money.Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-482G64Mnss Battery

While it may feel like Netbooks have dropped off the face of the earth in the post-iPad era, inexpensive 10- and 11-inch laptops still lurk out there, although they’re changing with the times. Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-5462G64Mnss03 Battery , While many Netbooks used to be and still are Intel Atom-based, with minimal processing capabilities and hovering around $299, a few 11-inch laptops have emerged with more powerful AMD-based processors and onboard graphics. We’ve reviewed several of these ultraportables with E-350 APUs, such as the HP Pavilion dm1z and Sony Vaio VPC-YB15KX/S. The $379 Acer Aspire One 722-BZ608 has an AMD APU (the company’s name for a CPU/GPU combo), Aspire 1690 Battery , but it’s a slower one: its AMD C-50 processor isn’t as fast as the ones in the HP Pavilion dm1 and its kin. It’s still a better experience than you’ll find on an budget Atom machine–maybe not in terms of raw speed, but in terms of two far more important factors: its included 4GB of RAM and its superior handling of streaming video.Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-5464G75Mnks Battery

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-5464G75Mnks Battery

A larger 11-inch screen, a full-size keyboard, and lots of memory and hard-drive space (4GB and 500GB, as much as you’d find in a larger laptop) add some value to this Acer Aspire. Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-5564G75Mnss Battery , With a hard drive large enough to hold big music, movie, and photo collections and a processor fast enough to play streaming HD video from Netflix and Hulu without a hiccup, this is a premium Netbook (or ultraportable) that truly lives up to the “premium” part. Except, consider this: for only a few dollars more, you could have an even faster and better-built HP dm1z, or another 11-incher with a far superior AMD E-350 processor. Acer Aspire TimelineX AS5820TG-5464G75Mnks Battery , To any casual passerby, the Acer Aspire One 722-BZ608 looks like an average candy-colored Netbook. It even fooled us: we thought the laptop was a 10-incher, when it’s actually 11.6 inches. The exterior design resembles recent Acer Netbooks, with a sparkling, glossy color finish and an eye-catching concentric ripple texture to the lid that looks like a drop of water splashed and froze in place.Acer Aspire TimelineX AS5820TG-5462G64Mnss Battery

The upper lid thrusts forward a bit off the back base when closed, but opens wide on twin plastic hinges to reveal a large keyboard filling most of the space inside.Acer Aspire TimelineX AS5820TG-484G64Mnss Battery , More teal blue in matte plastic surrounds the black keyboard, giving a two-tone effect, while the upper lid is framed in shiny black plastic. It’s a clean look. The power button, tucked against the bottom of the left-side hinge, blends in so well some might overlook it.At 3 pounds and 1 inch thick, the Acer Aspire One 722 is easy to hold in one hand and has a slim front edge. It’ll pack nicely into a carry-on. It’s a lighter 11-incher than competitors such as the HP Pavilion dm1z and Lenovo ThinkPad X120e, with a weight we’re more used to seeing in a 10-inch Netbook.Acer Aspire TimelineX AS5820TG-482G64Mnss Battery , It also has a compact AC adapter. One thing we’ve always liked about Acer’s Netbooks is their chargers: the small plugs look more like cell phone chargers, and pack easily in a backpack or small messenger bag. The two-prong plug is a bulky wall-wart, but there’s no bricklike AC adapter to worry about.Acer Aspire TimelineX AS5820TG-374G50Mnks Battery

While the Acer Aspire One may be light and slim, it’s not that fun to type on. Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-644G16Mnks Battery , The wide, flat keyboard exhibited quite a bit of flex, and the key response felt soft and mushy. Keys are also hard to locate, since the flat buttons are pressed so closely together. Backspace, Tab and Enter keys on the side are compressed to accommodate the full-size keys in the middle, which threw us off. Brightness and volume controls are relegated to the direction-arrow keys, and aren’t function-reversed. Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-6847 Battery , The multitouch touch pad below the keys is sizable, and makes the most of the limited vertical space below the keyboard, while the palm rest is narrow, and could aggravate those with big hands. The slightly recessed matte plastic surface responded well to basic touch, but didn’t offer much room for multifinger gestures. A black plastic button-bar beneath butts up against the bottom edge of the Acer’s front end, and is stiff and difficult to press.Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-7566 Battery

The 11.6-inch glossy LED-backlit display on this budget Acer Aspire has the 1,366×768-pixel resolution you’d expect to find on the average 13- to 15-inch laptop. Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-7805 Battery , This makes for a viewing experience that doesn’t compress browser windows or feel cramped. Maximum brightness doesn’t crank up very far, but it’s a solid screen that looked good during games and movies. The Aspire One’s top hinge opens up to a wide angle, and the viewing angles on the screen were actually better than on many budget laptops. That could come in handy when sharing videos or pictures with someone next to you.Speaking of videos, video streaming worked smoothly, far more so than on any Atom Netbook we’ve ever experienced. Acer Aspire TimelineX AS5820T-6401 Battery , Hulu and Netflix both played well in full-screen, even with other Web pages running simultaneously. That’s big news for someone looking for a cheap way to stream Netflix or Hulu on the go, but it’s a less impressive trick now that Blu-ray players, TVs, tablets, cell phones, and even handheld game systems can do the same thing.Acer Aspire TimelineX AS5820T-6825 Battery

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS5820T-6825 Charger

You will need headphones. Acer Aspire TimelineX AS5820T-7683 Battery , The included speaker is incredibly weak: even on maximum, it’s barely audible in a quiet office.A 640×480-pixel VGA Webcam isn’t the fancier HD type we’ve seen in an increasing number of laptops–it’s the same basic Webcam that most Netbooks and budget laptops have. However, the picture looked clean and well-lit in our in-office use. Don’t expect anything more than average video quality. The Acer Aspire One 722-BZ608 isn’t quite a Netbook, but its features certainly mirror one. Acer Aspire TimelineX AS5820TG-374G50Mn Battery . There’s no Bluetooth, but there are three USB ports. Built-in HDMI could come in handy, especially considering this laptop can stream video decently. The good: The Acer Iconia’s innovative dual-touch-screen design and virtual keyboard work better than you’d expect, and unlike other dual-screen PCs we’ve seen, this one has enough CPU power for everyday tasks. The bad: Speed typists will find that the virtual keyboard has a hint of a lag, and its (virtual) touch pad is needlessly small. Aspire 1681 Battery , It’s also saddled with last year’s Intel CPUs, rather than the latest generation, which might have given it better battery life. The bottom line: Unlike a lot of other unique proof-of-concept laptops, the Acer Iconia is fun to use and largely works as advertised. But it has a hard time answering the most frequent question we hear about it: why would anyone need a dual-touch-screen laptop?Aspire 1682 Battery
